5000 Dong, Vietnam (Issued 2003)

The 5000 dong was the highest-value coin of the Vietnamese dong, produced in the 2003 circulating coinage. Struck in a brass-coloured alloy, it has a warm golden colour, a light but firm feel and a plain edge. As with the other Vietnamese coins of the period, it was used only briefly before banknotes reasserted their place in daily trade.

On the obverse appears the national emblem of Vietnam — a golden star above a cogwheel and rice sheaves with the scroll “VIỆT NAM” — framed by the legend “CỘNG HÒA XÃ HỘI CHỦ NGHĨA VIỆT NAM” (Socialist Republic of Vietnam) and the year 2003.

On the reverse, the One Pillar Pagoda of Hanoi — a celebrated wooden temple rising from a single stone column above water — is depicted above the value “5000 ĐỒNG”, with the name of the issuing State Bank of Vietnam around the rim.
