About Zambian Kwacha Exchange

The Zambian Kwacha (ZMW) is the official currency of Zambia, introduced in its current redenominated form in 2013 to replace the old Kwacha at a rate of 1,000 to one. We accept all denominations of Zambian Kwacha banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Zambian Kwacha Banknotes

The current series of Zambian Kwacha banknotes, issued by the Bank of Zambia, features a range of denominations incorporating modern security features such as watermarks, security threads, and colour-shifting ink. We accept all current ZMW banknotes across the full range of denominations — whether you have smaller notes or the higher-value 200 ZMW note, all are welcome. If you have leftover Kwacha from a trip to Zambia, our service is a straightforward way to convert them back to sterling. Unlike most high street exchanges, we will not turn you away simply because you have an unfamiliar African currency — we also exchange other regional currencies such as Kenyan Shillings, Ugandan Shillings, and Tanzanian Shillings.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

We also accept the old pre-2013 Zambian Kwacha — the original currency that was in circulation before redenomination — at a slightly reduced rate. Unlike most high street exchanges and banks, we do not refuse withdrawn banknotes outright, provided they are at least 50% intact. If you have a mixture of old and new Kwacha tucked away at home, send them all together and we will assess each note on its merits. For customers who also hold other withdrawn African currencies, we exchange Nigerian Naira and a wide range of other currencies that high street providers routinely decline.

Zambian Kwacha Coins

Zambian Kwacha coins, denominated in ngwee (the subunit of the Kwacha), are accepted as part of our service — something most banks and bureaux de change will not offer. Coins are exchanged at a slightly lower rate than banknotes to reflect the additional handling costs involved, but there is no need to sort or roll them before sending. Simply include them with your banknotes and we will calculate the full value together.

Zambian Kwacha Exchange FAQ

Is the old Zambian Kwacha still worth anything?

Yes — the old Zambian Kwacha, which was replaced by the redenominated currency in 2013, is no longer legal tender in Zambia, but we can still exchange it for you. We accept old-series notes at a slightly reduced rate, provided they are at least 50% intact.

Can I exchange Zambian ngwee coins as well as banknotes?

Yes, we accept Zambian Kwacha coins (ngwee) alongside banknotes. Coins are exchanged at a slightly lower rate due to the additional handling involved, but you are welcome to include them with your banknotes in the same parcel — there is no need to separate them out.

How do I send my Zambian Kwacha to you?

Simply box up your Zambian Kwacha — banknotes and coins together if you have both — and post it to us yourself using a method of your choice. Once we receive and verify your currency, we will pay you within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you are unhappy with our offer, we will return your currency to you free of charge.

Will a UK bank exchange my Zambian Kwacha?

No — most UK banks and high street bureaux de change do not exchange Zambian Kwacha, as it is considered an exotic currency with limited demand in the UK. We specialise in exactly this type of currency, so you do not need to worry about being turned away.

Do you accept damaged or torn Zambian Kwacha banknotes?

Yes, we do accept damaged Zambian Kwacha notes, unlike most other exchange services. The key requirement is that each note must be at least 50% intact. If you are unsure whether a particularly damaged note qualifies, feel free to contact us before sending and we will be happy to advise.
