50,000 Dram Dram (Issued 2018)

Issued by the Central Bank of Armenia in 2018 as part of its commemorative series, the 50,000 Dram note stands as the highest denomination within this special collector programme, setting itself apart from regular circulation issues through its rich cultural and ecclesiastical iconography. The commemorative series as a whole draws upon Armenia’s deep Christian heritage and medieval scholarly tradition, with each denomination celebrating a distinct aspect of Armenian civilisation. This particular note is distinguished by its monumental figurative composition and its references to illuminated manuscript culture, placing it firmly within the tradition of honouring Armenia’s intellectual and spiritual history. The warm golden and ochre palette used throughout the series finds its fullest expression in this highest-value denomination.

On the front, the dominant central image is a full-length, finely detailed portrait of a religious figure dressed in elaborate episcopal vestments — this is Mesrop Mashtots, the 5th-century Armenian monk, theologian, and linguist credited with creating the Armenian alphabet. He stands in a formal, dignified pose wearing richly decorated clerical robes and a tall mitre-style headdress, rendered in careful intaglio-style engraving that gives the figure considerable depth and texture. Behind and around him, reproductions of pages from ancient Armenian illuminated manuscripts are visible, their intricate calligraphic text and decorative borders clearly discernible and forming a layered, palimpsest-like background. To the right of the central portrait, a large hand is depicted holding what appears to be a golden disc or medallion, rendered in warm amber and gold tones. To the lower left, a smaller vignette shows another hand or symbolic motif in deep gold. The serial number ԵԱ 00766302 is printed in dark ink, appearing both horizontally to the right of the portrait and vertically along the left-hand margin. The year 2018 is printed in the upper right corner. The issuing authority’s name, ՀԱՅԱՍՏԱՆԻ ՀԱՆՐԱՊԵՏՈՒԹՅԱՆ ԿԵՆՏՐՈՆԱԿԱՆ ԲԱՆԿ (Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia), is printed in Armenian script along the top of the note in bold dark lettering. The denomination is stated in both numeral form — 50000 — appearing prominently in the lower right and in smaller form mid-right, as well as in Armenian text ՀԻՍՈՒՆ ՀԱԶԱՐ ԴՐԱՄ along the lower portion of the note. A governor’s signature is visible to the right-hand side. Several small gold-coloured security elements are embedded at intervals, appearing as rectangular foil patches integrated into the design. The overall colour scheme is a rich, warm golden-amber with brown and ochre tones, printed on paper with a slightly textured, cream-tinted surface. Vertical and diagonal guilloche-style patterning forms part of the background security printing.

The reverse presents a sweeping landscape composition dominated by a finely engraved depiction of a medieval Armenian monastery complex set against a dramatic mountain backdrop, identifiable as Khor Virap Monastery, the historic pilgrimage site near Mount Ararat. The monastery’s distinctive stone church tower with its conical roof is clearly visible, along with ancillary chapel structures and fortified walls rendered in careful monochromatic engraving. The mountain rising behind the complex fills the upper portion of the composition, its slopes depicted in fine hatched lines. To the right of the landscape, a large standing figure in flowing robes and a hooded cloak is engraved in profile, gesturing with an outstretched arm towards the monastery — this figure is consistent with a representation of Gregory the Illuminator, the patron saint of Armenia and the country’s first Catholicos, who was famously imprisoned at Khor Virap. The figure is rendered in warm brown intaglio, with fine line work conveying the texture of heavy fabric. In the upper left corner, a small symbolic motif or emblem is printed. The issuing bank name in Armenian script runs along the top, and the denomination 50000 appears in large numerals in the lower left and upper right. The words ՀԻՍՈՒՆ ՀԱԶԱՐ ԴՐԱՄ are printed in deep red-brown lettering along the lower centre. The background colour throughout the reverse is a pale cream-gold with subtle tonal variation. Mirror printing of the denomination numeral 50000 is visible in ghosted form, likely serving as a see-through registration feature. Small text along the lower edge identifies the Central Bank of the Republic of Armenia in English.
