100 Cruzeiros Mil Reis (Issued 1961)

The 100 Cruzeiros banknote issued in 1961 by the Tesouro Nacional of Brazil was withdrawn from circulation as Brazil underwent successive monetary reforms throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. The cruzeiro itself was eventually replaced by the cruzeiro novo in 1967, rendering notes of this series no longer valid as legal tender. This particular issue belongs to a commemorative series drawing on the heritage of the Imperio do Brasil, referencing the Thesouro Nacional issues of 1833 to 1850, and represents one of the final expressions of that long monetary tradition before modernisation took hold.

On the front, the note is dominated by a finely engraved oval portrait at the centre, depicting Dom Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, rendered in deep blue intaglio engraving with exceptional detail in his full white beard, formal dark jacket, and dignified expression. The portrait is framed within an ornate oval border composed of fine lathe-work and guilloché patterning, which extends outward into elaborate symmetrical scrollwork filling much of the note’s face. The background colour is a medium blue-grey with intricate repetitive geometric designs typical of American Bank Note Company production. The header reads “REPÚBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL” in bold serif capitals across the top, while the footer carries “CEM CRUZEIROS VALOR LEGAL” in clear, prominent lettering. Below this, the printer’s imprint reads “AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY” in small capitals. The denomination numeral “100” appears in each of the four corners in bold blue print, and the serial number “085732” is printed twice in red — once on the left and once on the right of the note. Red overprinted text indicates “ESTAMPA 1A SÉRIE 1395A” in the upper left and upper right areas. Two manuscript signatures appear at the lower left and lower right, corresponding to the Diretor da Caixa de Amortização and the Ministro da Fazenda respectively. The overall tonal palette is anchored in blue and slate tones against a lighter background, with the red serial numbers and series annotations providing deliberate contrast.

The reverse is printed in a warm reddish-brown monochrome throughout, presenting a richly detailed allegorical engraving at its centre. A classical female figure, representing the Brazilian Republic or a personification of knowledge and progress, is depicted reclining against a large terrestrial globe, holding a scroll or document in one hand. Surrounding her are symbols of learning and civilisation — an open book, a lyre or harp-like instrument, and natural landscape elements including mountains and foliage in the background. The engraving is executed with fine cross-hatching and detailed linework consistent with the high standards of American Bank Note Company intaglio printing. Flanking the central scene are large bold “100” numerals in each corner, set within decorative oval frames built from guilloché lathe-work. At the top, the partial text “REPÚBLICA DOS” is visible in serif capitals, while the footer reads “ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL” in matching bold serif typography. Below this, the printer’s credit “AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY” appears in small capitals. The entire reverse composition conveys the grandeur of the imperial and republican Brazilian tradition through its dense, carefully composed engraving.
