5 Brazilian Cruzeiros Banknote (Barao Do Rio Branco Brown Type)

5 Cruzeiros Mil Reis (Issued 1953-1959)

The printer’s imprint at the base of this note — “Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited, London” — signals the prestige of craftsmanship brought to bear on Brazil’s mid-twentieth-century currency programme. Printed under the authority of the Tesouro Nacional and bearing the full state title “República dos Estados Unidos do Brasil”, this five cruzeiros note forms part of a transitional series bridging Brazil’s imperial monetary heritage with its modern republican identity. The denomination sits within the broader Mil Reis currency lineage, and this particular issue circulated between 1953 and 1959 before being withdrawn from use.

On the front, the central focus is a finely engraved oval portrait of Floriano Peixoto, the second President of Brazil and a pivotal figure in the consolidation of the Brazilian republic, rendered in dark brown intaglio engraving with confident cross-hatching that gives depth and texture to his distinguished face, prominent moustache, and formal attire. The portrait is set within an ornate oval frame positioned centrally on the note, flanked on either side by intricate guilloché rosette patterns in pale olive and brown tones that fill the background field with elaborate geometric precision. The numeral “5” appears in large form on both the left and right sides of the note, printed in dark brown against the lighter guilloché ground. At the top, the issuing authority is declared in bold serif lettering: “REPÚBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL”, with the central band reading “NO TESOURO NACIONAL” flanked by the promise text “SE PAGARÁ AO PORTADOR” and “DESTA A QUANTIA DE”. Serial number 028521 appears in red at both the upper right and lower left positions, while the series and print references — “ESTAMPA 2A SÉRIE 1410A” — are noted in red on both sides of the note. Signature lines are visible at the lower left attributed to the Directoria de Caixa de Amortização and at the lower right to the Ministro da Fazenda, with a cursive signature present beneath the latter designation. The lower banner carries the full denomination text “CINCO CRUZEIROS” alongside the designation “VALOR RECEBIDO”, all printed in clear, formal typography within a pale cartouche. Corner ornaments feature sunburst and floral motifs that reinforce the classical design language of the note.

The reverse is rendered entirely in a warm brown monochrome palette and is dominated by a large, finely engraved historical scene identified by a caption at the lower centre as “BATISMO DO AMAZONAS” — the Baptism of the Amazon — depicting a dramatic gathering of figures including European missionaries and indigenous peoples set beneath tall trees and beside sailing vessels, the entire composition rendered with the detailed hatching and tonal gradation characteristic of De La Rue’s intaglio printing tradition. The scene fills the central panel of the reverse almost entirely, conveying a sense of historical and cultural weight. Flanking this central image on both the left and right are bold guilloché ornamental panels incorporating large numeral “5” figures at multiple positions, rendered in the same brown tone. At the top, partial state titling reads “REPÚBLICA DOS —” with the completion “ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL” appearing in a banner at the foot of the note. The printer’s credit “THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY LIMITED, LONDON” is printed in small lettering at the base. The overall paper shows a clean, cream-toned stock with the note’s design elements printed with consistent registration throughout.
