5 Cruzeiros Mil Reis (Issued 1962-1964)

Printed by Thomas De La Rue & Company, Limited, London — one of the world’s foremost security printing houses — the 5 Cruzeiros note of the 1962–1964 issue carried the inherent anti-counterfeiting credentials associated with De La Rue’s intaglio engraving processes, which produced a characteristic tactile quality in the printed lines that was extremely difficult to replicate. The paper itself possesses the fine, crisp texture typical of De La Rue security stock of the era. The note was issued under the authority of the Thesouro Nacional, Brazil’s national treasury, and bears serial numbering repeated in multiple positions as an additional verification measure. These physical security characteristics were considered robust for their period, reflecting the standards demanded of currency in active circulation during Brazil’s early Cruzeiro monetary era.

On the front, the note is dominated by a finely engraved oval portrait at the centre, depicting Floriano Peixoto, the second President of Brazil, rendered in detailed intaglio line engraving with careful attention to his distinctive white moustache and formal attire. The portrait is set within an oval frame and surrounded by elaborate guilloché patterning that fans outwards across the note in symmetrical formations of fine interlocking curves, printed in a combination of olive-brown and muted red-pink tones. Large numeral fives appear prominently in each corner of the note, and the word “5” is also displayed centrally in bold form on either side of the portrait. The header reads “REPÚBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL” in bold, evenly spaced capital lettering across the top, with “THESOURO NACIONAL” arching across a curved banner directly above the portrait. A curved text panel at the base reads “CINCO CRUZEIROS” in large serif capital lettering, with “VALOR LEGAL” immediately beneath. To the lower left and right of the portrait, two printed signatures appear — one identified as “DIRETOR DA BASE DE AMORTIZAÇÃO” and the other as “MINISTRO DA FAZENDA”. The series and print references appear in red overprint: “ESTAMPA 2ª SÉRIE” is printed vertically in red on both the left and right sides, alongside the serial number 092160 and the plate number 3064A, repeated in each margin. The printer’s imprint “THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED, LONDON” appears along the very bottom edge of the note.

The reverse is printed in a warm sepia-brown tone throughout and features a large, highly detailed intaglio engraving occupying the full central field of the note. The scene depicts the Conquista do Amazonas — the conquest or colonisation of the Amazon — showing a dramatic historical gathering of figures beneath tall trees, with groups of people that appear to include indigenous individuals, colonial settlers, clergy, and military or official figures assembled around what appears to be a camp or ceremonial setting, with flags visible in the background. The engraving is executed with fine cross-hatching and line work characteristic of De La Rue’s classical intaglio style, giving depth and atmosphere to the scene. At the top of the reverse, the partial text “REPÚBLICA DOS” appears in bold capitals, while the lower border carries the full inscription “ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL” in matching bold serif lettering. The denomination numeral “5” is repeated in each corner and appears in small square cartouches set within the corner guilloché border patterns. The printer’s credit “THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED, LONDON” is printed in small type along the lower margin.
