50 Cruzeiros Mil Reis (Issued 1954-1961)

Where modern banknotes rely on polymer substrates, holographic foil strips, and machine-readable microprinting, the 50 Cruzeiros note issued between 1954 and 1961 placed its authority entirely in the hands of master engravers working in the intaglio tradition — a craft whose tactile depth no digital reproduction can fully replicate. The note was produced by Thomas De La Rue & Company Limited, London, one of the most prestigious security printers of the twentieth century, whose name appears in fine lettering at the foot of both faces. What endures from this era into contemporary design is the principle of layered complexity: dense geometric patterning at the borders, a commanding central portrait, and clear hierarchical typography — all principles still employed by central banks worldwide. This particular issue belongs to the República dos Estados Unidos do Brasil series and carries the Thesouro Nacional designation, anchoring it firmly within Brazil’s mid-century monetary history.

On the front, the note is dominated by a warm purple-violet tone applied across the entire face, with the engraving rendered in darker intaglio lines that give the design its characteristic three-dimensional quality. At the very top, in bold capital letters, runs the full title “REPÚBLICA DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL,” establishing national identity with prominence. Beneath this, a central oval vignette contains a finely engraved portrait of Princess Isabel of Brazil — the daughter of Emperor Pedro II, celebrated historically for signing the Lei Áurea in 1888 that abolished slavery in Brazil. She is depicted with dark hair dressed in ringlets and wearing a pearl necklace, her expression composed and regal, the engraving capturing fine detail in the face, collar, and jewellery with exceptional precision. Flanking the portrait on both left and right sides are elaborate guilloché rosette panels of considerable intricacy, their swirling lathe-work patterns forming symmetrical decorative fields that discourage counterfeiting and provide visual balance. The denomination numeral “50” appears four times in the corners, rendered in a bold serif typeface, with additional “50” figures woven into the decorative border. The overprinted text “THESOURO NACIONAL” arches across the central section in red, distinguishing this as a Thesouro Nacional issue. The serial number “040644” appears twice in red — once to the upper right and once to the lower left — and is accompanied by the stamped designation “ESTAMPA 2ª SÉRIE 531A” in red, identifying the print run and series. Below the portrait, the note reads “CINQUENTA CRUZEIROS” and “VALOR RECEBIDO” in clear capital lettering. Two manuscript signatures appear at the lower left and lower right, identified in printed text beneath them as the Diretor de Amortização and the Ministro da Fazenda respectively, lending the note its formal governmental authority. A fine printer’s credit at the very base reads “THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY LIMITED, LONDON.”

The reverse is printed in a consistent purple-violet tone that mirrors the front, maintaining the visual coherence of the series. At the top, the partial title “REPÚBLICA DOS” appears within the upper border, with “ESTADOS UNIDOS DO BRASIL” completing the inscription across the lower border, neatly framing the entire composition. The central scene is a large allegorical engraving depicting a seated female figure — a classical representation of the Republic or of national progress — shown resting against a rocky outcrop and holding what appears to be a stone tablet or plaque. She wears a flowing robe and a crown, and behind her to the right a tree and a distant mountainous landscape are visible, with what appears to be the distinctive profile of Sugarloaf Mountain rendered in the background skyline, evoking the geography of Rio de Janeiro. The engraving is rich in tonal depth, with fine crosshatching conveying shadow and volume across the figure’s drapery and the rocky terrain beneath her. On both the left and right flanks, tall guilloché panels carry the denomination numeral “50” within oval frames, surrounded by dense floral and scroll-work engraving. The corners carry additional “50” numerals in bold type. The printer’s imprint “THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY LIMITED, LONDON” runs along the lower margin of the reverse, confirming the note’s London manufacture.
