5 Dinars Iraqi Dinar (Issued 1980-1982)

Issued during the early years of Saddam Hussein’s presidency, this 5 Dinar note from the Central Bank of Iraq entered circulation at a pivotal and turbulent moment in Iraqi history, coinciding with the outbreak of the Iran–Iraq War in September 1980. The note reflects the ambitions of a state seeking to project cultural heritage and national identity through its official currency during a period of profound political transformation. These issues, produced between 1980 and 1982, represent one of the first series to bear the direct imprint of the Baathist government under Saddam Hussein’s consolidated authority. Today, these withdrawn notes are encountered by those who lived through or studied that era of Iraqi history.

On the front, the central design features a dramatic landscape vignette depicting a rocky canyon with a waterfall cascading down pale stone cliffs, rendered in warm ochre and pale brown tones against a soft lilac and pale blue background. The scene conveys the natural geography of Iraq and is engraved with considerable tonal depth, giving the rocky formations a three-dimensional quality. The issuing authority is printed at the top of the note in Arabic script, identifying the البنك المركزي العراقي — the Central Bank of Iraq — in elegant, closely-spaced lettering. The denomination numeral “٥” appears prominently in the upper left and right corners in bold Arabic-Indic numerals, and an additional stylised numeral 5 is displayed within a decorative rosette element at the upper right. Arabic calligraphic text carrying the denomination inscription “خمسة دنانير” — Five Dinars — appears in bold, flowing script to the right of the central vignette. The serial number 554164, prefixed with the series designation خ/٣٠٥, appears twice on the face of the note, once in the upper right and once in the lower left, printed in dark red ink. The background is filled with intricate guilloché latticework in pale lavender and soft pink, with scrolling wave-like ornamental borders framing all four corners. A fine security thread is embedded vertically within the paper. Marginal text in Arabic script appears along the lower edge, and the date “١٤٠٠ — ١٩٨٠” is printed near the top centre, referencing both the Hijri and Gregorian calendar years. Authorising signatures appear beneath the central inscription panel on the right-hand side.

The reverse is dominated by a detailed engraved bird’s-eye perspective illustration of a large ancient architectural complex, presented in rich purple and dark maroon tones against the characteristic pale lilac base of the note. The structure depicted appears to be a monumental ancient Mesopotamian building with colonnaded courtyard walls, towers, and a rectangular enclosed plan consistent with ancient Iraqi archaeological sites. To the left of this central image, a decorative panel displays a richly detailed geometric Islamic tilework pattern in shades of blue, pink, and cream, featuring star and hexagonal formations typical of traditional Iraqi ornamental design. The words “Central Bank of Iraq” are printed prominently across the top of the reverse in clear serif English lettering, while “Five Dinars” appears in matching serif type along the lower centre. The numeral “5” is repeated in the upper left and upper right corners in bold type, and a large stylised Arabic “٥” is set in an ornamental cartouche at the lower left. The surrounding borders carry the same guilloché scrollwork seen on the obverse, reinforcing the visual continuity of the design. The paper exhibits a pale watermark zone visible when held to light, consistent with the security paper standards of the period.
