1/4 Dinar Iraqi Dinar (Issued 1979)

By 1979, the Central Bank of Iraq had been operating as the sole authority over the country’s monetary system for nearly three decades, managing the Iraqi Dinar through a period of significant political and economic transformation. The bank’s mandate encompassed the issuance and regulation of all currency in circulation, and this quarter dinar note formed part of a series designed to serve everyday transactional needs across the Iraqi economy. The year 1979 marked a pivotal moment in Iraqi history, coinciding with the formal assumption of power by Saddam Hussein, whose government would go on to oversee successive currency issues throughout the 1980s. Notes of this series carried the institutional authority of the Central Bank of Iraq at a time when oil revenues were reshaping the country’s financial landscape.

On the front, the note is dominated by a finely engraved central vignette depicting a grove of tall date palm trees, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving with tonal variations moving from deep olive-green to warm brown. The palm grove scene is framed by an ornate border design incorporating scrolled and spiralling decorative elements at the upper corners, executed in dark olive-green against a pale background. The issuing bank name appears in Arabic script across the top of the note, and the denomination is written in clear Arabic script to the right of the central image as “ربع دينار” — meaning Quarter Dinar. The serial number 0875817 appears twice on the face of the note, once to the upper right and once to the lower left, printed in dark numerals, and is accompanied by a prefix fraction in Arabic numerals. A line of Arabic text running beneath the central vignette carries the issuing authority’s name, and further Arabic text appears to the lower right indicating the note’s legal tender status. At the base of the note a date panel displays the Hijri year 1399 alongside the Gregorian year 1979, printed in red. Decorative guilloché rosette work fills the lower central portion of the note in green and olive tones, flanked by further scroll-form embellishments. The denomination fraction one-quarter appears in a small panel to the left margin. The overall colour palette is a restrained combination of olive, khaki, and warm brown, with the background paper carrying fine geometric latticework patterns in pale green.

The reverse is printed primarily in a deep olive-green and grey-purple duotone palette, with the words “Central Bank of Iraq” rendered in bold Latin-script serif lettering across the top banner on a scroll device, flanked on each side by the fraction “1/4” within decorative cartouches. The denomination “Quarter Dinar” is similarly displayed in English across a scroll banner at the lower portion of the reverse, again flanked by matching “1/4” cartouches. The central vignette on the reverse presents a highly detailed engraved architectural scene of a large Islamic building, featuring a grand iwan archway with elaborate muqarnas decoration and a series of arched colonnades extending on either side, consistent in style with historical Abbasid or early Islamic architecture in Iraq. Arabic script captioning appears beneath the architectural vignette. To the left of the main architectural scene, a striking geometric rosette pattern in pale blue-green and white depicts an Islamic star-form tile design, providing a strong visual counterpoint to the monochromatic engraving. The reverse borders incorporate fine guilloché latticework in pale green along all four edges, and the overall composition is tightly structured with the denomination details, architectural centrepiece, and decorative geometry working together within a carefully balanced layout.
