10 Shilingi / Shilli Shilling (Issued 1989-1994)

The late 1980s marked a period of consolidation in Kenya’s post-independence monetary identity, during which the Central Bank of Kenya continued to assert national symbolism through its currency designs under the presidency of Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. The ten-shilling denomination issued from 1989 to 1994 forms part of the broader Arap Moi Series, which ran from 1988 to 1995 and represented a sustained visual programme linking state authority with economic confidence. Dated 14th October 1989 on its face, this note was issued at a time when Kenya was navigating significant political and economic pressures, making it a document of both monetary and historical substance. Its horizontal layout on the front and the careful arrangement of national imagery reflect the design conventions of the era.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, President of the Republic of Kenya, positioned to the right of centre. The portrait is rendered in a rich green intaglio engraving, with meticulous line work capturing his suit and tie, and the text “DANIEL TOROITICH ARAP MOI / President of the Republic of Kenya” printed in small lettering directly beside him. To the upper centre, the issuing authority is clearly stated in two lines: “BANKI KUU YA KENYA” and “CENTRAL BANK OF KENYA”, with the legal tender declaration “LEGAL TENDER FOR TEN SHILLINGS” printed beneath. The denomination numeral “10” appears in bold at the upper left and upper right corners, with additional “10” numerals repeated along the lower right. The serial number AA6712733 is printed in green and appears twice — once vertically along the left-hand side and again horizontally towards the upper right. The date “14TH OCTOBER, 1989” is printed centrally beneath the Kenyan coat of arms, which is engraved in fine detail at the left of centre, depicting two lions supporting a shield with a traditional Maasai warrior’s spear and shield motif, accompanied by the national motto. To the lower left, a decorative rose motif in lilac and green adds a softer illustrative element, while geometric and guilloché border patterns in orange, yellow, and green run along the upper and lower margins, incorporating triangular and diamond shapes that echo traditional Kenyan textile designs. Two facsimile signatures appear below the coat of arms, attributed to the Governor and a Member of the Board of Directors. The lower denomination text reads “SHILINGI KUMI” in bold capital lettering. The overall colour palette of the front is dominated by greens and yellows with warm orange accents, and a faint multicoloured security strip is embedded vertically through the paper.

The reverse presents a detailed intaglio engraving of a large institutional building, identifiable as a university or college campus, set against a dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountain peaks — consistent in appearance with Mount Kenya. The building is a wide, multi-storey structure with a row of columns or pilasters at its entrance and flanking wings extending to either side, rendered in fine brown and olive line engraving. In the foreground, several figures in academic graduation gowns and mortarboards are depicted, suggesting a scene of scholarly ceremony, with additional smaller figures visible near the building’s entrance. To the left of the central image, an engraved scroll or diploma document is visible, reinforcing the academic theme of the scene. The denomination “TEN SHILLINGS” is printed in bold serif lettering across the upper centre of the reverse, with the numeral “10” appearing in hexagonal frames at the upper left, upper right, and lower right. A large, intricate guilloché rosette pattern in mauve and lilac occupies the right side of the note, and a secondary geometric pattern in pink and orange is visible in the upper right quadrant. The colour palette of the reverse blends green, brown, mauve, and pale blue, with the mountain peaks rendered in soft blue and purple tones to give depth and atmosphere to the scene. The paper shows a light, even texture with subtle watermark areas visible when examined against the light.
