1,000 Shilingi / Shilling (Issued 2003)
Kenya’s 2003 post-reform banknote series marked a significant moment of monetary consolidation, introducing updated security features and a refined visual identity while maintaining the long-standing tradition of honouring the nation’s founding leadership. The 1,000 Shilling denomination sits at the top of the everyday circulation range and carries considerable symbolic weight as a statement of national identity and economic confidence. Issued by the Central Bank of Kenya on 1st April 2003, this note belongs to the Kenyatta Issue of 2003–2004, a series designed to modernise Kenya’s currency infrastructure whilst preserving continuity with earlier patriotic themes. The result is a note of considerable visual complexity, combining fine intaglio work with layered colour printing and multiple security measures.
On the front, the dominant feature is a large, detailed portrait of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the first President of Kenya, rendered in a warm sepia and brown engraving that occupies the left-centre of the note. Kenyatta is depicted in a dark suit and tie, his expression composed and dignified, his beard and features rendered with fine line engraving that gives the portrait considerable three-dimensional depth. To the upper right, the issuing authority is clearly stated in bilingual form: “BANKI KUU YA KENYA” in bold serif lettering above “CENTRAL BANK OF KENYA”, flanked by the denomination numeral “1000” repeated in the upper corners. The Kenyan national coat of arms — featuring a Maasai shield and two spears — appears prominently to the right of centre, printed in rich detail. Below this, the text reads “LEGAL TENDER FOR ONE THOUSAND SHILLINGS” followed by the Swahili denomination “SHILINGI ELFU MOJA” in large, prominent red lettering. Further text beneath identifies the subject as “THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF KENYA MZEE JOMO KENYATTA” and notes the authorisation “FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS”, with signature lines for the GOVERNOR and MEMBER visible at the lower right. The serial number AU3417869 appears twice — vertically along the left edge in red and horizontally in black at the lower right — printed in a crisp sans-serif typeface. The date “1st APRIL 2003” is printed in small text near the upper left. The background field is filled with intricate guilloché rosette patterning in warm ochre and gold tones, with a lighter oval watermark window to the upper right. A small golden elephant head motif appears on the lower left, and the overall colour palette moves through rich terracotta, warm brown, and golden amber tones, giving the note a warm, authoritative character.
The reverse presents a sweeping, naturalistically rendered wildlife scene executed in soft brown, beige, and sage-green tones across the full width of the note. A herd of African elephants dominates the foreground, depicted in careful detail with varying ages represented — large tusked adults stand alongside smaller juveniles, one of which appears to be resting low in the grass. The animals are arranged in a loose grouping that fills the lower half of the composition with great visual weight and textural richness, the engraving capturing the wrinkled skin and bulk of each animal with considerable skill. In the middle distance, the scene opens onto open grassland, and two or three buffalo are visible grazing on higher ground, their darker silhouettes contrasting with the lighter tonal background. A tall, pale egret or similar wading bird stands in the foreground grass, its slender form a delicate counterpoint to the mass of the elephants nearby. The background is rendered in pale khaki and muted greens suggesting open savannah and distant tree cover. The denomination “1000” appears in deep burgundy-red in all four corners of the reverse, printed in bold serif numerals. To the lower right, a circular security device in orange-red tones features an hourglass or similar symbol, providing an additional anti-counterfeiting element. The overall composition is rich with tonal gradation, giving the scene depth and atmosphere consistent with museum-quality intaglio printing.
