200 Shilingi / Shill Shilling (Issued 2004)

The Central Bank of Kenya, established in 1966 following independence, entered the early 2000s as the principal monetary authority overseeing a currency system undergoing significant structural reform. By 2003 and 2004, Kenya’s financial landscape was being reshaped by renewed anti-corruption drives and broader economic stabilisation efforts under the newly elected National Rainbow Coalition government, which had come to power in late 2002. The Kenyatta Issue of 2003–2004 represented a deliberate redesign of the Kenyan shilling note series, incorporating enhanced security features and reaffirming the nation’s founding identity through the continued honouring of its first president on the circulating currency. The 200 shilling denomination, bearing the date 2nd February 2004, sat as a mid-range note within this reformed series, representing everyday transactional value for Kenyan citizens and businesses alike.

On the front, the note is dominated by a finely engraved portrait of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the First President of Kenya, rendered in detailed intaglio to the left and centre of the composition. Kenyatta is depicted in a dark suit with a tie, his expression dignified and composed, his face rendered with close cross-hatched engraving lines that give the portrait considerable depth and tactile quality. The background behind the portrait features intricate guilloché patterns in warm amber, gold and pale orange tones, with fine geometric latticework extending across the upper and right-hand portions of the note. To the upper right, the Kenyan national coat of arms is clearly printed, featuring the shield and two spears flanked by lions, rendered in a compact but detailed vignette. The issuing authority name “BANKI KUU YA KENYA — CENTRAL BANK OF KENYA” runs along the top of the note in bold serif capitals in dark ink. Directly below, the denomination is stated prominently as “SHILNGI MIA MBILI” in large display lettering, with the text “LEGAL TENDER FOR TWO HUNDRED SHILLINGS” appearing above it. A further line reads “THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF KENYA” followed by “MZEE JOMO KENYATTA” in clear upper-case type. The phrase “FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS” appears beneath, flanked by the printed signatures of the Governor and a Member of the board. The serial number AW6951568 appears twice — once vertically in red along the left margin and once horizontally in dark ink in the lower right area. The date “2ND FEBRUARY 2004” is printed in small text towards the upper left. The denomination numeral “200” appears prominently in the upper left and upper right corners in teal-green ink, and again in larger numerals at the lower left. A security thread is embedded vertically through the note, visible as a dark embedded strip. To the lower left of the obverse, a small vignette depicting what appears to be a lion and a partial circular emblem or watermark window is visible. The overall colour palette of the front blends deep purple-brown for the portrait engraving with warm amber, gold and teal-green tones across the background and denomination numerals.

The reverse presents a richly detailed agricultural scene engraved in a landscape orientation, depicting three figures harvesting cotton in a field. To the left stands a woman dressed in a white blouse and dark skirt, carrying a basket filled with freshly picked cotton bolls. In the centre and right, two male figures are shown working among tall cotton plants in full bloom, their clothing rendered in light tones against the green foliage. The cotton plants are depicted with considerable botanical accuracy, showing open bolls, leaves and stems in careful line engraving. The background of the scene opens into a wide agricultural landscape with gently rolling hills and open sky rendered in pale olive and yellow-green tones. The denomination numeral “200” appears in teal-green in all four corners of the reverse, maintaining consistent typographic identity with the front. Along the left and right margins, vertical bands of fine guilloché patterning in green and olive tones frame the central agricultural vignette. A small circular security feature or emblem is visible to the lower right of the reverse. The overall colour scheme of the reverse is dominated by muted greens, olive yellows and light grey-brown tones, giving the note a warm, earthy character appropriate to its agricultural subject matter. Show-through from the obverse security thread and portrait engraving is faintly visible, consistent with the note’s cotton-fibre paper substrate.
