50 Shilingi / Shilli Shilling (Issued 1990)
Kenya in the early 1990s was firmly under the single-party rule of President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, who had governed the country since 1978 following the death of founding President Jomo Kenyatta. The period was marked by significant political pressure both domestically and internationally, as pro-democracy movements and Western donors pushed for multiparty reform, which Kenya would eventually adopt in 1991. The Central Bank of Kenya issued this 50 Shillings note during that turbulent transitional era, bearing the date 1st July 1992 as printed on the note itself. It forms part of the Arap Moi Series, a distinctive family of Kenyan banknotes characterised by the president’s portrait as the central design element.
On the front, the dominant feature is a formal engraved portrait of Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, President of the Republic of Kenya, positioned to the right of centre against a lightly patterned background. The portrait is rendered in fine intaglio engraving with strong tonal depth, showing Moi in a dark suit and tie with a white pocket square, his gaze directed slightly to his left. Beneath the portrait, a small engraved rose motif is visible. To the left of the portrait sits the Kenyan national coat of arms, rendered in colour with a shield, two lions as supporters, and a cockerel atop the crest, set against a guilloché-patterned oval. Above the coat of arms, a vivid multicoloured fan or plume design in shades of blue, red, orange, and green adds a striking decorative element. The issuing authority is printed at the top in bold lettering: “BANKI KUU YA KENYA” on the first line and “CENTRAL BANK OF KENYA” on the second. The text “LEGAL TENDER FOR FIFTY SHILLINGS” appears in smaller print across the upper centre. The serial number AH726817 appears twice — once vertically along the left edge and once horizontally to the right, both printed in red. The denomination “50” appears in large numerals in the upper left and upper right corners, each set within a red diamond-shaped guilloché frame. The date “1ST JULY 1992” is printed in the lower central area, and below that the text “FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS” accompanies two facsimile signatures with printed name designations. At the base of the note, the denomination in Swahili, “SHILINGI HAMSINI,” is printed in bold capital letters. The overall colour palette of the front is warm rose-red and pink, with cream and light brown tones across the note’s ground.
The reverse presents a detailed architectural and urban scene dominated by a panoramic view of central Nairobi. The most prominent structure is the cylindrical Kenyatta International Conference Centre tower, rendered in dark olive-green engraving, rising above a broad rectangular slab building to its left that represents the main conference hall. To the left of the composition, further commercial and government buildings are depicted, with a suggestion of Mount Kenya’s snow-capped peaks visible faintly in the distant background. The foreground shows a wide multi-lane road or plaza area rendered in light tones. To the right of the central cityscape, a large guilloché rosette pattern in olive green provides an intricate geometric security design, and above it the multicoloured fan motif — in blue, pink, red, and green — mirrors the decorative element seen on the front. The denomination “FIFTY SHILLINGS” is printed in bold dark lettering across the top centre of the reverse. The numeral “50” appears in the upper left and lower right corners, each enclosed within a diamond-shaped guilloché frame, the upper examples in red and the lower in darker olive tones. The overall colour scheme of the reverse is principally olive green and dark teal, creating a strong contrast with the warm tones of the front face.
