100 Rufiyaa (Issued 1995–2013)

The 100 Rufiyaa note issued by the Maldives Monetary Authority between 1995 and 2013 incorporates a security thread embedded within the paper, visible as a dark vertical strip when held to the light, alongside a watermark integrated into the substrate that was a standard anti-counterfeiting measure for Indian Ocean island currencies of this period. The ascending serial number format — a feature that gives this printing its identifying characteristic — adds a further layer of verification, with the numerals increasing in size from left to right across the serial panel. Fine guilloché patterning throughout the note’s background provides additional protection against photographic reproduction. Together these features reflect the Maldives Monetary Authority’s security standards during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

On the front, the design is dominated by a richly detailed central vignette featuring a cluster of coconut palm fronds rendered in shades of green, with bunches of coconuts visible among the foliage, evoking the tropical landscape of the Maldives. To the right of this central image, a traditional Maldivian dhow — a sailing vessel with a distinctive lateen sail — is depicted navigating calm waters, finely engraved against a pale aquamarine and cream background. The overall colour palette of the front combines soft greens, pale blue-greens, and warm cream tones. In the lower foreground, a scattering of seashells and coral is rendered in delicate engraved detail. The serial number E433537 appears twice on the front: once in green numerals in the ascending size format to the left of centre, and again in smaller print to the lower right. The date inscription, shown in both Gregorian and Hijri calendar formats — reading 2000 and 1421 — is printed centrally in black text alongside Dhivehi script. A signature appears below the central vignette, attributable to the Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority at the time of issue. The denomination numeral 100 is displayed prominently in the upper left and lower right areas in green and olive tones respectively. The upper and lower borders of the note carry repeating geometric and floral ornamental bands, with further guilloché scroll work framing the composition on all sides. Dhivehi script text identifying the issuing authority runs across the lower portion of the note.

The reverse presents a commanding architectural vignette at its centre, depicting a substantial two-storey stone or coral-block building with a pitched roof, flanked by palm trees and set behind a walled compound with an entrance gateway — this building is the Maldives Monetary Authority headquarters in Malé. The structure is rendered in fine intaglio-style engraving in tones of grey, olive, and pale gold, with the surrounding grounds and gateway details carefully delineated. To the upper right, the denomination is stated in English as “One Hundred Rufiyaa” in black serif lettering, with the numeral 100 printed in gold-toned ink alongside it. To the lower left, a large ornate guilloché numeral 100 is printed in olive green, and a corresponding smaller 100 appears to the lower right within a decorative cartouche. The name “MALDIVES MONETARY AUTHORITY” is printed in bold black capital letters along the lower border of the note, providing a clear institutional attribution. The upper border features a repeating band of fine geometric ornament in green and olive, while flowering tropical foliage — including frangipani blossoms — is depicted in the upper left corner, adding a naturalistic element to the otherwise formal architectural composition. The background of the reverse is overlaid with subtle multicoloured guilloché lacework in pale green, gold, and cream, providing depth and security to the overall design.
