10 Tögrög Tugrik (Issued 2002-2020)
The 10 Tögrög banknote issued by Mongolbank remains part of the current series that has circulated in Mongolia from 2002 through to 2020, representing one of the lower denomination notes in everyday Mongolian commerce. Although low in face value, this note has seen continuous use across its long production run, with successive print years maintaining the same fundamental design. Notes from the earliest years of this series, such as those bearing the 2002 date visible on this example, are gradually being displaced by newer print runs whilst remaining technically legal tender. Holders of this note in the United Kingdom may still present it for exchange through specialist currency services.
On the front, the note is printed predominantly in shades of blue and green against a pale, lightly tinted background, with fine guilloché patterning forming a decorative frame around the central composition. The principal portrait depicts Genghis Khan as a young man, shown in a finely engraved oval vignette positioned to the left of centre; he is portrayed wearing a traditional dark Mongolian deel garment and a distinctive hat, rendered with careful intaglio detail that captures the texture of the fabric and the shading of his features. To the right of the portrait sits a circular emblem featuring the Soyombo symbol, Mongolia’s national emblem, enclosed within an ornate cartouche. The denomination numeral “10” appears prominently in the upper left and lower left areas of the note in bold, stylised script, as well as mirrored in the upper right corner. The serial number AD0763225 is printed twice in red — once in the upper right area and once across the lower centre of the note — providing clear identification for individual notes. Mongolian script text runs vertically along the right-hand portion of the note, with the issuing authority’s name and denomination rendered in both Cyrillic and traditional Mongolian vertical script. The upper border carries a band of intricate geometric and floral ornamental patterning, and additional fine latticework borders frame the entire design.
The reverse of the note is printed in a complementary palette of teal, light blue, and muted brown, with a bold upper border rendered in dark brown bearing the Cyrillic text “МОНГОЛ УЛС” — meaning “State of Mongolia” — in prominent capital letters. The central vignette, occupying the majority of the note’s face, depicts a finely engraved pastoral landscape scene showing two horses grazing on open steppe grassland, with a coniferous tree to the left, rolling hills, and distant mountains rendered in careful line engraving that captures depth and texture across the scene. Below this landscape vignette, the denomination “ТӨГРӨГ” is printed in bold Cyrillic capitals within a dark brown banner. To the left of the central image, a narrower vertical panel displays the text “МОНГОЛБАНК” — the name of the Mongolian central bank — printed vertically in Cyrillic alongside decorative circular security printing elements. The denomination numeral “10” appears in the upper left and lower left corners of the reverse, with an ornamental rosette motif in the lower left. The year “2002” is printed in small numerals at the bottom left of the note, indicating the print year of this particular example.
