100 Tögrög Tugrik (Issued 2000-2014)

The 100 Tögrög banknote issued by Mongolbank remains current legal tender in Mongolia, forming part of the long-running series that has circulated since 2000 and encompasses notes printed through to 2014 under the same design framework. As one of the lower denominations in the Mongolian tugrik system, this note has seen sustained everyday use across the country throughout its circulation period. The note bears the year 2000 on its reverse, marking the inception of this particular design series, which was subsequently reprinted across subsequent years with the identifying features of the 2006–2020 issue cycle. Its continued status as legal tender means specimens presented for exchange in the United Kingdom are straightforwardly processable through standard currency exchange services.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Genghis Khan — the founder and first Great Khan of the Mongol Empire — rendered in a circular vignette at the centre-left of the note. The portrait depicts him in traditional Mongolian dress, wearing a distinctive tall, dark hat associated with Mongolian imperial attire, with his face shown in a composed three-quarter view. The engraving employs fine intaglio line work that creates depth and tonal variation across the face and costume. The overall colour palette of the front is a combination of deep purple-violet and soft lilac, with paler pink and peach tones in the background security print. A circular emblem of the Soyombo symbol — Mongolia’s national emblem — appears to the right of the portrait within an ornamental roundel. The denomination numeral “100” appears prominently in the upper left and lower centre of the note, with an additional “100” rendered in the upper right. The serial number “AA 0009241” is printed twice — once in the lower centre area and once in the upper right — in deep blue ink. Mongolian script text appears in vertical columns to the right of centre, with further Mongolian script running along the right-hand side of the note. The issuing authority’s name is rendered in Mongolian script alongside two printed signatures. Intricate guilloché patterning fills the background across the note’s face, with a decorative border running along the top edge incorporating traditional Mongolian geometric and floral motifs. A vertical panel of traditional Mongolian rectangular ornamental design appears along the left margin. The paper itself carries a security watermark visible on the unprinted areas to the right.

The reverse presents a richly detailed landscape scene occupying the central and right portion of the note, depicting two Mongolian horses grazing on open steppe grassland, with a mountain range and conifer trees forming the backdrop. The horses are engraved with considerable detail, their musculature and coats rendered through fine line work in warm brown and ochre tones that contrast with the cooler purple and lavender hues of the surrounding design. Additional livestock can be observed in the middle distance of the scene, emphasising the pastoral character of the Mongolian countryside. The text “МОНГОЛ УЛС” — meaning “State of Mongolia” — is printed in bold Mongolian Cyrillic lettering across the top of the reverse in deep violet ink. The denomination word “ТӨГРӨГ” is printed in similarly bold Cyrillic characters along the lower edge of the central panel. To the left, a vertical rectangular panel features the name “МОНГОЛБАНК” — the Bank of Mongolia — printed vertically in Cyrillic script alongside an ornamental design incorporating the Soyombo symbol within a detailed decorative frame. The numeral “100” appears in the upper left and lower right corners of the reverse. The print year “2000” is visible in small type in the lower left corner of the note. The colour scheme of the reverse blends warm brown, golden ochre, and violet-purple tones, unified by a background of fine guilloché security printing.
