10 Rials Rial Omani (Issued 2020)
The 2020 issue of the Omani 10 Rial banknote holds particular significance as one of the first notes to bear the portrait of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, who acceded to the throne in January 2020 following the passing of Sultan Qaboos bin Said after five decades of rule. This transition of leadership represented a defining moment in Omani history, and the introduction of updated banknote designs bearing the new Sultan’s likeness marked a tangible expression of that change in the nation’s currency. The note therefore stands as both a practical monetary instrument and a document of Oman’s political continuity. Its 2020 date places it at the very outset of a new chapter in Omani public life.
On the front, the dominant feature is a formal portrait of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, depicted wearing a white dishdasha and a richly coloured turban in shades of deep orange and red, consistent with traditional Omani royal dress. The portrait is rendered in fine detail with careful tonal gradation, positioned toward the right-centre of the note against an intricately patterned geometric background of deep blue, green, gold, and terracotta — a dense Islamic arabesque design that fills much of the upper and right portions of the face. To the left of the portrait sits a central architectural vignette depicting a domed mosque rendered in soft greens and earth tones, with fine engraved linework conveying the building’s ornate facade and symmetrical arches. The upper portion of the note carries the issuing authority name in Arabic script, reading البنك المركزي العُماني, along with a line of Arabic legal tender text running horizontally. The denomination is stated prominently in Arabic as عشرة ريالات, meaning ten rials. The numeral 10 appears in large format at the lower left in a warm gold-green colour-shifting ink. A serial number, reading ق/١ ٥٩٩٢٥٥٢, is printed in black ink on the left side. A signature appears in black script near the lower centre of the note, attributed to the Central Bank Governor. To the upper right, a holographic or optically variable security patch in deep blue-purple is visible, bearing an embedded architectural image. The right-hand border features a narrow strip of repeating decorative geometric pattern in gold and green tones, consistent with Islamic tilework motifs. The overall colour palette of the front is warm gold, deep navy, olive green, and terracotta, unified by the intricate patterned background.
The reverse carries the text “CENTRAL BANK OF OMAN” printed in clear black serif capitals across the upper portion, with the denomination numeral 10 appearing at the upper right and the text “TEN RIALS” in bold serif type at the lower right. The central design of the reverse is dominated by a large architectural and archaeological composition rendered in fine engraved linework. On the left side of this central image, ancient stone ruins are depicted — rows of weathered columns and low stone walls set against an arid rocky landscape, consistent in style with the pre-Islamic archaeological sites of Oman such as those found at Sumhuram or similar heritage locations. This engraved vignette is printed in pale brown and grey tones with considerable detail in the stonework. To the right of the ruins, a tall ornate tower or minaret facade is depicted in sharper engraved detail, featuring a finely decorated arched doorway with geometric carved stone ornamentation, rendered in grey and cream tones. A small optically variable or holographic blue square element is visible at the upper left of the reverse. The left-hand background of the reverse carries a subtle repeating geometric guilloche pattern in pale green, while the right-hand border mirrors the intricate Islamic tilework pattern seen on the obverse, rendered in green, gold, and white. The denomination “10 RIALS” also appears vertically in red-green on the far left edge. A print date reference of 1441 AH / 2020 is visible in small text near the lower centre of the note.
