50 Rials Rial Omani (Issued 2020)

Issued in 2020 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the renaissance of Oman, this commemorative banknote was released during the reign of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, who had ascended to the throne in January 2020 following the passing of Sultan Qaboos bin Said — one of the most transformative leaders in modern Arabian Peninsula history. The note forms part of the 2020 Landmarks Issue, a commemorative series authorised by the Central Bank of Oman to celebrate five decades of the country’s modern national development. The date range visible on the note — ١٩٧٠–٢٠٢٠ — marks precisely that half-century of Omani renaissance. As both a circulating commemorative and a statement of national identity, this fifty rial note represents the highest denomination in the series.

On the front, the dominant feature is a formal portrait of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the late ruler of Oman who led the country from 1970 until his death in January 2020, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving to the right of centre. He is depicted wearing traditional Omani dress, including a white dishdasha and a richly embroidered ceremonial kumma cap, with a bisht draped over his shoulders. His expression is composed and dignified, and the portrait is framed against a background of intricate geometric and arabesque patterning rendered in teal and green tones. To the left of centre, a large engraved architectural vignette depicts what appears to be the Majlis Al Dawla building — the Council of State — shown in fine linear detail with arched colonnades, formal gardens, and surrounding grounds. The background of the note carries elaborate guilloché patterns in pale teal and sage green, with repeating geometric latticework that transitions across the width of the note. The issuing authority name, البنك المركزي العُماني, appears in bold Arabic calligraphy across the upper portion of the note, and the denomination خمسون ريالاً is printed in Arabic script beneath a line of smaller Arabic text. A serial number, ف/١ ٥٣٥٦٨٣٨, appears in both horizontal and vertical orientations, the latter running along the right-hand security strip area. The numeral ٥٠ appears in large format in the upper right corner and again in pale watermark-style printing lower left. A security strip embedded vertically on the right side carries the numeral 50 in windowed foil format with a copper and gold reflective quality. The commemorative dates ١٩٧٠–٢٠٢٠ are printed in the lower portion, accompanied by a small emblem of the Omani khanjar and crossed swords. The note is signed in Arabic script, with the name of the Governor of the Central Bank of Oman appearing in the lower central area. A panel of rich geometric Islamic tilework in amber and teal tones appears in the far lower left corner, adding warm contrast to the predominantly cool-toned palette.

The reverse presents a sweeping engraved panoramic view of a grand Omani civic complex, identifiable as the Muscat cityscape featuring a prominent domed governmental or ceremonial building rendered centrally in detailed intaglio engraving, with colonnaded wings extending to either side and formal open plazas in the foreground. To the right of this main structure, a modernist architectural element — angular and monumental in form — is depicted, suggesting a cultural or governmental landmark of contemporary design. The engraving is executed with exceptional fineness, with cross-hatched shading conveying depth across the building facades, courtyards, and surrounding landscape features. The background of the reverse is layered with guilloché rosette patterns in pale teal and aquamarine, with panels of Islamic geometric tilework visible in the lower right quadrant, echoing the ornamental motifs of the front face. The text CENTRAL BANK OF OMAN is printed in bold serif capitals across the upper left portion of the note in dark ink, while the denomination 50 appears in large numerals in the upper right corner, and FIFTY RIALS is printed in English in the lower right corner. The lower central area carries a small printed legend including what appears to be a date reference. Running vertically along the right margin, a band of repeating copper-toned security marking features is visible, aligned with the security strip placement visible from the obverse. The overall colour palette of the reverse is a refined combination of steel blue, sage green, and warm amber, giving the note a restrained yet ceremonially distinguished appearance.
