10 Rials Rial Omani (Issued 2000)
The 10 Rials note forms part of the Central Bank of Oman’s 2000 issue series, sitting above the lower denominations in a family of notes that share a consistent design language rooted in Omani heritage, architecture, and portraiture. Across the series, a warm palette of earth tones and rich browns provides visual continuity, while each denomination is distinguished by its own combination of central imagery and size. The 10 Rials occupies a prominent position within the series, and its design reflects the grandeur expected of a higher-value note. Its dual-language presentation, combining Arabic script with English text, underlines Oman’s outward-facing confidence at the turn of the millennium.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the late ruler of Oman who reigned from 1970 until his death in 2020, depicted to the right of the note in characteristic regalia including a richly patterned turban. The portrait is rendered with considerable detail, capturing the Sultan’s beard and formal ceremonial dress with precision characteristic of intaglio printing. The central portion of the note features a vignette of a traditional Omani fort tower and mud-brick architecture set amongst palm trees, evoking the country’s desert interior landscape. The background is dominated by warm brown and tan tones, with subtle guilloché patterning providing texture across the field. The issuing authority name, البنك المركزي العُماني (Central Bank of Oman), is printed in bold Arabic script along the upper register, while Arabic denomination text reading عشرة ريالات (Ten Rials) appears prominently in the lower centre of the note. The serial number 5560055 appears twice on the face, once in the upper left and once in the lower right, printed in dark ink. A governor’s signature appears in Arabic script in the lower centre, accompanied by the text سلطان عمان. The numeral 10 is displayed in large form in the lower left corner. Along the right-hand edge of the note, a decorative vertical border incorporating the Omani national emblem — the khanjar dagger and crossed swords — repeats in a geometric strip, rendered in blue and red tones. A security thread is embedded within the paper, visible as a dark vertical line running through the note’s interior field.
The reverse of the note is centred on a sweeping panoramic vignette of Mutrah, the historic port district of Muscat, depicted with considerable engraving detail. The scene captures the seafront cityscape with low-rise buildings running along the waterfront and, dominating the upper portion of the image, the impressive Mutrah Fort perched high on the rocky hillside above the town. The fort is rendered with architectural precision, showing its crenellated walls, towers, and the rugged terrain of the surrounding cliffs. A body of water is visible in the foreground, consistent with the Mutrah Corniche area. The colour palette on the reverse transitions through warm sandy browns, terracotta, and muted blue tones reflecting the sky and sea. Along the upper register, the text CENTRAL BANK OF OMAN is printed in clear serif capitals against a light background, flanked by an ornate geometric border panel to the right that echoes Islamic geometric tile patterns in brown and orange. The denomination TEN RIALS is printed in bold serif text across the centre of the note beneath the main vignette. The numerals 10 appear twice on the reverse, once in the lower left and once in the lower right, in strong brown ink. The serial number is partially visible in the upper right area. A small Arabic word, appearing to read مطح, is visible beneath the central vignette. The overall print quality of the reverse is crisp, with fine line engraving throughout the architectural and topographical detail.
