Issued by the Bank of Korea from 1983, this 1,000 Won note is dominated by a finely engraved portrait of Yi Hwang (1501–1570), the pre-eminent Korean Confucian scholar of the Joseon dynasty who wrote under the pen name Toegye. The portrait is placed towards the right of the front against a ground that moves through pale cream, rose and lilac tones, with Yi Hwang shown in traditional scholarly attire. The issuing authority appears in Korean script as “한국은행권”, with the denomination “천원” (one thousand won) in bold characters and the numeral “1000” in the corners. A raised tactile dot assists visually impaired users, and the note is printed on cotton-fibre security paper with fine intaglio engraving characteristic of Korean printing of the period. It circulated until its withdrawal in 2007.

The reverse presents Dosan Seowon, the Confucian academy that Yi Hwang founded and where he taught, shown in a rendering after the celebrated landscape painting by Jeong Seon (Gyeomjae). Printed predominantly in tones of purple and violet, the engraving captures the academy’s traditional hanok buildings with their tiled roofs and wooded hillside setting. “THE BANK OF KOREA” is printed across the reverse, with the numeral “1000” and “1000 WON” shown in bold serif type and decorative guilloché rosettes framing the design.
