10,000 Won (Issued 1983)

Printed on paper that has developed a warm, slightly aged tone across its surface, this 10,000 Won banknote from South Korea’s 1983 issue presents with a predominantly olive-green and grey-brown colour palette that was characteristic of high-denomination printing of the period. The note has a firm, slightly textured feel consistent with the intaglio printing methods employed by the Bank of Korea during this era. Its relatively large format conveys the authority expected of the highest everyday denomination in circulation at the time. The overall condition of the example shown is crisp and well-preserved, with clear detail retained across both the engraved portrait and the architectural vignette.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of King Sejong the Great, the revered fourth monarch of the Joseon Dynasty and creator of the Korean Hangul alphabet, positioned to the right of centre within a defined oval frame. He is depicted wearing a traditional black gat hat and dark robes, rendered with careful intaglio detail that conveys depth and gravitas in the facial features, including his distinctive beard and composed expression. To the upper left, the denomination is rendered in bold Hangul characters reading 만원, accompanied by the issuing authority name 한국은행권 in Korean script across the top of the note. A coiling dragon motif in blue-grey occupies the central background, surrounded by cloud-like guilloché patterning that transitions through soft greens and blues. To the lower left, a detailed architectural vignette depicts stone pagoda structures, rendered in a sepia-brown engraving style. The serial number 0207837 appears twice — once in the upper left and once in the lower centre — printed in dark ink alongside the series identifier 다아바. A red circular seal impression appears beside the portrait, and a small rosette pattern of three circular dots is visible at the lower left margin. The numeral denomination 10000 appears prominently in the upper left corner and again at the lower right, both in clear sans-serif typography.

The reverse is dominated by a large, centrally placed engraving of Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, the magnificent royal banquet hall set within a reflecting pool on the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. The pavilion is depicted with precise architectural detail — its multi-tiered tiled roof, supporting stone columns rising from the water, and the surrounding landscape are all rendered in fine intaglio line work in blue-grey and olive tones. The name of the issuing authority, THE BANK OF KOREA, appears in bold Latin lettering across the top of the note, and the denomination 10000 WON is stated clearly in the lower left in large numeral and text form. To the upper right, the denomination 10000 is repeated within a decorative panel. Circular rosette ornaments in olive and cream appear on both the left and right margins, providing additional guilloché decoration. The lower margin carries a line of fine Korean text, and a further green numeral panel reading 10000 appears at the lower right. The overall reverse palette moves through soft grey-greens and warm olive tones, giving the architectural scene a dignified, authoritative appearance.
