1,000 Shilingi Tanzanian Shilling (Issued 2010–2023)

Advanced anti-counterfeiting technology defines the 1,000 Shilingi note of Tanzania’s modern high-security series, incorporating a windowed security thread embedded within the paper that becomes visible as a continuous metallic strip when held to the light. A watermark portrait, consistent with the central figure depicted on the face of the note, is integrated into the paper substrate and can be observed by holding the note towards a light source. The note’s overall paper quality and intaglio printing contribute to a raised tactile surface on key design elements, a standard feature of high-security currency produced during this period. These measures were introduced to bring the Tanzanian Shilling into line with international best practice in banknote security during the 2010s.

On the front, the dominant feature is a detailed portrait of Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, the founding President of Tanzania, rendered in blue-toned intaglio engraving that gives the image considerable depth and tactile relief. His name, “MWALIMU JULIUS K. NYERERE”, is printed in small, clear text directly beside the portrait towards the right-centre of the note. The overall colour palette of the obverse is a cool, pale aquamarine and blue, with the portrait occupying the right-of-centre position. To the upper left, the issuing authority is identified in bold capital lettering: “BENKI KUU YA TANZANIA”, with the secondary inscription reading “FEDHA HALALI KWA MALIPO YA SHILINGI ELFU MOJA” immediately beneath. The national coat of arms of Tanzania appears in the upper-left area, rendered in fine detail. Two prominent diamond-shaped holographic or optically variable ink elements appear on the note — one positioned centrally to the left and one to the upper right — printed in a deep violet and blue that shifts perceptibly with the viewing angle, serving as a principal overt security feature. The serial number “AA9707229” is printed in blue along the lower-left vertical margin, and again along the right-hand vertical edge of the note. The denomination “1000” appears in large numerals at the lower right, with “SHILINGI ELFU MOJA” printed in bold beneath the portrait area. Two facsimile signatures appear at the lower centre of the note, attributed to the “WAZIRI WA FEDHA” (Minister of Finance) and “GAVANA” (Governor of the Bank of Tanzania), with the respective signature titles printed beneath each. Fine guilloché latticework and repeating diamond micro-pattern borders frame the note on all four edges in a deeper blue, adding a further layer of complexity to the background design.

The reverse is dominated by a highly detailed engraved vignette of a large, imposing colonial-era stone building, rendered throughout in shades of blue and violet. The structure features arched colonnades, battlemented turrets, ornate multi-storey facades with decorative stonework, and a central tower flying a flag at its summit. Tall palm trees and tropical foliage are visible to the left of the building, and additional architectural wings extend to the right. This building is the Beit el Ajaib, also known as the House of Wonders, a landmark historical structure located in Stone Town, Zanzibar. The issuing authority is stated in English at the top of the reverse as “BANK OF TANZANIA”, with the denomination “1000” appearing in the upper right corner in large, bold numerals. At the lower right, the denomination is repeated as “ONE THOUSAND SHILLINGS” in clear capital lettering. The background of the reverse continues the note’s characteristic diamond micro-pattern border running along all edges, and a faint ghost impression of the denomination “1000” is visible as a see-through register element in the right-centre field of the note when observed against the light, aligning with corresponding print on the obverse. The overall tonal treatment of the reverse is cooler and more uniform than the front, rendered largely in a single-family blue-violet palette with considered variation in ink density to suggest architectural depth and shadow.
