5,000 Shilingi Tanzanian Shilling (Issued 2010-2025)

Tanzania’s natural wildlife heritage occupies a place of extraordinary pride in the national consciousness, and the black rhinoceros — one of Africa’s most iconic and endangered megafauna — has long symbolised the country’s commitment to conservation across the Serengeti and its surrounding ecosystems. The 5,000 Shilingi banknote of the modern high-security series captures this cultural and ecological identity, placing wildlife at the very heart of everyday commerce. Issued by the Benki Kuu Ya Tanzania from 2010 onwards, this note reflects a deliberate design philosophy that ties monetary symbolism to the natural world Tanzania seeks to protect. The denomination also speaks to Tanzania’s growing economy and the central bank’s ongoing modernisation of its currency infrastructure.

On the front, the dominant central image is a highly detailed engraved portrait of a black rhinoceros head, rendered in a deep violet-blue intaglio style that gives the animal’s textured hide, curved horns, and alert expression a striking three-dimensional quality. The rhino occupies the right-centre of the note against a field of fine guilloché latticework that extends across the background in pale lavender and white tones. To the upper centre, the issuing authority is clearly printed in bold serif lettering as “BENKI KUU YA TANZANIA,” with the subtitle beneath reading “FEDHA HALALI KWA MALIPO YA SHILINGI ELFU TANO,” establishing the legal tender status of the denomination in Swahili. The denomination numeral “5000” appears prominently in the upper left and lower right, with “SHILINGI ELFU TANO” printed in bold text to the lower right of the rhino image. To the left of the rhino, the Tanzanian national coat of arms is printed in fine detail, featuring the characteristic shield, crossed spear and axe, and supporting figures. Beneath the coat of arms sits a diamond-shaped guilloché ornament in deep violet, providing an additional focal element. A vertical security thread is embedded to the right side of the note, printed with the serial number “BM0451511” running vertically in bold numerals. A second serial number appears horizontally at the lower left in matching red-violet print. Two facsimile signatures appear below the coat of arms, attributed to the “WAZIRI WA FEDHA” and “GAVANA,” representing the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Tanzania respectively. A small watermark zone is visible to the far left, where a ghost impression of “5000” can be discerned in the paper. The outer borders of the note are framed by a repeating geometric diamond-and-chevron pattern in dark violet, lending a structured, formal edge to the overall composition. Colour tones across the front shift from pale silvery-white through mid-violet to a deeper blue-purple in the intaglio engraving areas.

The reverse features a bold and detailed industrial scene dominated by what appears to be a large-scale mining or processing facility, rendered in fine blue-violet engraved line work. The machinery — comprising conveyor systems, processing towers, cylindrical tanks, and structural frameworks — fills the central and left portions of the note, conveying Tanzania’s significant mineral extraction sector, particularly its gold mining industry. A mountainous or elevated landscape forms the backdrop to the industrial complex, engraved in graduated tones that suggest depth and scale. To the upper right, a copper-gold coloured diamond-shaped holographic or colour-shifting ink element displays a giraffe motif, providing both a decorative and security function, with the warm amber tone contrasting sharply against the cool violet ground of the note. The denomination “5000” is printed boldly in the upper right corner, and the issuing authority “BANK OF TANZANIA” appears in clear serif lettering across the top of the note in its English-language form. The lower left carries a large “5000” numeral, and the lower right bears the denomination in full English text: “FIVE THOUSAND SHILLINGS.” A ghost or see-through register element is faintly visible near the upper right, showing a small “5000” numeral that aligns with a corresponding element on the obverse. The border treatment on the reverse mirrors the front, with repeating diamond-and-chevron geometric patterning in dark violet framing all four edges of the note.
