20 Dinars Dinar (Issued 2017)

Intaglio printing, offset lithography, and modern security thread technology were all well established by the time the Banque Centrale de Tunisie issued this 20 Dinars note in 2017, and their combined application is clearly visible across the note’s surface. The raised tactile quality of the portrait and numeral work is characteristic of intaglio engraving, which gives depth and texture perceptible to the touch. Fine guilloché patterning fills large areas of the background, a hallmark of contemporary security printing designed to defeat digital reproduction. The date inscription 2017-7-25 appears along the lower left of the front, confirming this as a dated issue within the broader 2013–2025 series.

On the front, the dominant feature is the engraved portrait of Farhat Hached, the celebrated Tunisian trade union leader and nationalist figure, rendered in a finely detailed intaglio style against a lightly patterned background. The portrait is positioned to the right of centre, showing Hached in a suit and tie, his expression composed and forward-facing, with fine cross-hatching used to model the face and clothing with considerable depth. To the left of the portrait, the denomination numeral “20” is printed in a bold, deep red, occupying a substantial area of the lower left quadrant, with its size and weight making it immediately legible. A circular gold-toned security element or emblem appears in the upper left area, containing a smaller “20” within it, adding a further layer of security and visual interest. The overall ground colour of the front is a warm rose-pink, overlaid with delicate repeating geometric and floral guilloché patterns visible across the entire surface. Arabic script dominates the upper portion of the note, with the name of the issuing authority, the Banque Centrale de Tunisie rendered in Arabic as البنك المركزي التونسي, running prominently across the top. Additional Arabic text appears in the central upper zone, including the denomination written in Arabic words. A serial number, F/1 5313901, appears in the lower right in dark print, and the same serial reference is repeated in the upper left in a different orientation. The date 2017-7-25 is printed in small text along the lower left margin. A security thread is embedded within the paper and is visible as a dark vertical stripe running through the body of the note. The name “FARHAT HACHED” is inscribed in small Latin script along the lower edge beneath the portrait. Floral rosette motifs appear in the right-hand portion of the front, reinforcing the decorative security patterning.

The reverse features the name “Banque Centrale de Tunisie” printed prominently in clean serif typography across the upper portion, accompanied by the denomination numeral “20” on both the upper left and upper right. The central design is dominated by a detailed architectural engraving of the Amphitheatre of El Jem, one of the largest Roman coliseums in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Tunisia. This ancient monument is depicted from two perspectives: a smaller oval vignette showing an aerial or elevated view of the complete circular amphitheatre appears to the left, while a larger, more prominent engraving to the right renders the exterior arched façade of the structure in considerable detail, with individual arches, stonework courses, and the tiered elevation all clearly articulated through fine line engraving. To the lower left, a classical Corinthian-style column capital is engraved with precision, referencing the Greco-Roman heritage of the site. The caption “L’amphithéâtre d’El Jem” appears in small text beneath the architectural imagery. The denomination is also rendered in Arabic script “دينار” to the right of the large architectural vignette. In the lower left, the text “20 VINGT DINARS” is printed in bold, providing the denomination in both numerals and French. The overall colour palette of the reverse is a softer rose and lilac-pink, consistent with the front, with fine guilloché wave patterns filling the background throughout. A small decorative floral rosette device appears in the upper left near the “20” numeral.
