5 Dinars Dinar (Issued 2013)

The Banque Centrale de Tunisie, established in 1958 following Tunisia’s independence from France, serves as the country’s sovereign monetary authority and sole issuer of the Tunisian dinar. The bank has long prioritised the incorporation of cultural and historical identity into its banknote designs, using its currency as a medium through which Tunisian civilisational heritage is projected and preserved. The 2013 issue of the 5 Dinars note represents a continuation of this tradition, drawing on the deep Carthaginian roots that define much of Tunisia’s ancient historical narrative. As the institution responsible for monetary policy and financial stability in Tunisia, the Banque Centrale de Tunisie brings considerable institutional authority to the production and design of this series.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Hannibal Barca, the celebrated Carthaginian military commander, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving at the centre-right of the note. The portrait depicts him facing slightly to the left, wearing a decorative diadem or crown, with a full beard and strong classical features consistent with ancient sculptural representations of the figure. His name appears in both Arabic and Latin script — “HANNIBAL” — just below the bust. The background behind the portrait features a detailed aerial or elevated view of what appears to be the El Djem amphitheatre, the great Roman colosseum of Tunisia, rendered in fine line engraving across the green and olive toned field. The numeral “5” appears in large bold print to the upper left in deep green, accompanied by the Arabic text “خمسة دنانير” (five dinars) below it. The issuing bank’s name, البنك المركزي التونسي, is printed across the top of the note in Arabic script, with an additional line of smaller text beneath it. A serial number, “3035326”, appears in the lower right corner in red print, preceded by the prefix “ج/1”, and is repeated in a smaller format towards the upper left of the note. The issue date 2013-3-20 is visible in small numerals near the lower centre. To the right-hand side, a security strip is embedded within the paper, running vertically through the note. A small black square electrotype watermark placeholder area is visible in the lighter right-hand panel, alongside two signature lines with Arabic script identifying the governor and another senior official of the bank. A decorative geometric border in a Greek-key or meander pattern runs along the top and bottom edges of the note in olive green, and a subtle guilloché background pattern fills the field in layered green and yellow tones.

The reverse features the name “Banque Centrale de Tunisie” printed prominently across the top in clean serif typography in dark green. The central design is dominated by a large oval vignette containing an intricately engraved depiction of ancient Carthaginian warships — identified by the caption “NAVIRES CARTHAGINOIS” printed in small text beneath the vignette — rendered in detailed line engraving against a background suggestive of a globe or map grid, evoking the maritime reach of the Carthaginian empire across the Mediterranean. The ships are depicted with multiple oars and sails in fine intaglio detail. The denomination numeral “5” appears in the upper right corner in bold green, with “دنانير” (dinars) in Arabic alongside it, and the bilingual text “5 CINQ DINARS” is printed in the lower left in strong dark lettering. To the left of the central vignette sits a large, pale circular watermark zone left intentionally light for the embedded watermark visible when the note is held to the light. The embedded vertical security thread is visible running through the right-centre of the note, appearing as a series of dark dashes. The border treatment mirrors the front, with the same geometric meander pattern in olive green framing the top and bottom edges. The overall colour palette of the reverse is a harmonious combination of olive green, sage, and pale yellow, consistent with the front.
