20 Dinars Dinar (Issued 2011)

The 2011 issue of the Tunisian 20 Dinar banknote arrived at one of the most turbulent and transformative moments in the country’s modern history. The Jasmine Revolution of December 2010 to January 2011 had just brought down the 23-year authoritarian rule of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, making Tunisia the catalyst for the wider Arab Spring movement that swept across the region. The Central Bank of Tunisia continued issuing currency under the transitional government that followed, and this note — dated 2013 on the face despite its series classification — bears the visual identity of a nation reaching back to its deeper historical roots for symbols of identity and pride. The choice of a 19th-century historical figure as the central image reflects a conscious effort to ground Tunisian national currency in a pre-colonial era of sovereignty and cultural confidence.

On the front, the note is dominated by an imposing engraved portrait of Khayr al-Din al-Tunisi, the 19th-century Ottoman-Tunisian statesman and reformist prime minister, depicted mounted on a rearing chestnut horse and dressed in a dark military uniform with gold epaulettes and a red fez. The equestrian figure is rendered with fine intaglio engraving, giving the portrait a rich, tactile depth. Behind him to the left, a ruined hilltop fortress or ancient stone settlement is depicted in warm ochre and amber tones, its crumbling walls and towers providing a sense of historical grandeur and continuity. The dominant colour palette of the front is a warm burnt orange, amber, and brown, fading to pale pink and cream towards the right-hand side of the note. In the upper left, the issuing authority name is printed in Arabic script — البنك المركزي التونسي — alongside a secondary line of Arabic text in smaller type. The large denomination numeral “20” appears prominently in the upper right in dark ink, while the denomination in Arabic script, عشرون ديناراً, is displayed centrally in bold calligraphic lettering. The serial number 0223425 appears twice: once in the lower left in black ink prefixed with the series identifier, and once in the upper right in red ink. A vertical security strip is embedded towards the right side of the note, bearing repeating fine print. Two authorising signatures appear on the right side of the note, printed in black, alongside the Arabic text for Governor and another official title. The date 2013-03 is printed in small type near the lower centre of the note. Intricate guilloché rosette patterns and fine-line geometric latticework fill the right-hand margin, rendered in pale lilac and pink hues, with a decorative floral roundel visible in the far right border.

The reverse presents a warm rose-pink and coral colour scheme, with the central design element being a detailed architectural engraving of Sadiki College — L’École Sadiki — in Tunis, the historic educational institution founded in 1875 by Khayr al-Din al-Tunisi himself, tying the reverse directly to the portrait figure on the front. The building is shown with its distinctive minaret tower rising above a colonnaded facade, surrounded by palm trees and formal grounds, all contained within a large oval vignette. The engraving is executed in deep reddish-brown ink over a pale ground, with fine cross-hatching lending texture and shadow to the architecture. A small caption beneath the vignette reads “L’ÉCOLE SADIKI” in Latin script alongside Arabic text identifying the same institution. The name “Banque Centrale de Tunisie” is printed in full in dark blue serif type along the upper margin in French. The denomination “20” appears in the upper left and upper right corners, with “دينارا” in Arabic script to the right. At the lower left, the full denomination “20 VINGT DINARS” is printed in bold dark type. The left-hand border features an intricate repeating geometric pattern in rose and cream, incorporating Moorish-inspired lattice and star motifs. A latent image security element and watermark zone are evident in the lighter areas of the paper to the right.
