50,000 Shillings / S Ugandan Shilling (Issued 2003-2008)

The 50,000 Ugandan Shilling banknote issued between 2003 and 2008 reflects the economic aspirations and cultural identity of Uganda at the turn of the twenty-first century, drawing together symbols of national pride, agricultural heritage, and civic achievement. Cotton cultivation, long one of Uganda’s most important cash crops and a cornerstone of rural livelihoods, is celebrated prominently in the note’s imagery, honouring the millions of Ugandan farmers whose labour sustained the country’s export economy. The note’s design choices speak to a nation building its financial institutions and asserting a confident national identity through its currency. Issued by the Bank of Uganda as part of its 2003–2009 high denomination expansion series, it represents a significant step in Uganda’s monetary history.

On the front, the dominant central-left feature is a tall figurative sculpture rendered in fine intaglio engraving — identifiable as the Uganda Martyrs Monument or a representative national memorial statue, depicted with an outstretched figure raising a torch aloft, set upon a tall plinth. This sculptural image is executed in warm brown and purple tones, with fine line engraving capturing the texture and dimensionality of the stonework. Behind the statue, an elaborate guilloché pattern fans out in concentric oval and interlocking circular designs rendered in pale blue and violet, providing both aesthetic depth and anti-counterfeiting complexity. At the top of the note, the issuing authority name “BANK OF UGANDA” is printed in bold serif capitals in dark brown ink, flanked on either side by the denomination numeral “50000” in matching typography. The central denomination text reads “FIFTY THOUSAND SHILLINGS” and directly below in Swahili “SHILINGI ELFU HAMSINI”, followed by the legal tender clause “LEGAL TENDER FOR FIFTY THOUSAND SHILLINGS FOR BANK OF UGANDA” in smaller serif type. The Ugandan national coat of arms, featuring the crested crane and kob antelope flanking a shield, appears in an ornate cartouche below the central text. Two facsimile signatures appear beneath the coat of arms, labelled “GOVERNOR” on the left and “SECRETARY” on the right. The year “2003” is printed in small numerals in the lower-right area. To the far right of the note sits a prominent holographic foil security strip running vertically, displaying repeating “BCU” text elements and the denomination “50000” in iridescent shifting colours, including gold, blue, and green. The serial number “AA784943” appears both horizontally across the upper-right area and vertically along the left margin. The overall colour palette of the front is dominated by warm purples, mauves, and golden-brown tones, with the guilloché background lending a pale lavender wash across the central field. A band of fine repeated microprint geometric patterns borders the upper and lower edges of the note.

The reverse presents a richly detailed intaglio scene depicting cotton harvesting in full field, rendered in deep brown and warm ochre tones with exceptional engraving precision. Three figures occupy the foreground: a woman standing upright on the left dressed in a patterned wrap and head covering, a man in the centre holding a large woven basket filled with white cotton bolls, and a second figure bent forward at work in the field to the right. A fourth figure is visible in the mid-ground further along the field rows, conveying the communal and labour-intensive nature of cotton picking. The cotton plants themselves are rendered in fine detail, with individual bolls and leaves clearly delineated across the full width of the central vignette. The background opens into an expansive agricultural landscape receding to a flat horizon. Above this scene, “BANK OF UGANDA” is again printed in bold serif capitals, with “50000” numerals to the upper left and the denomination legend “FIFTY THOUSAND SHILLINGS / SHILINGI ELFU HAMSINI” to the upper right in smaller serif type. The denomination “50000” is repeated in large numerals at the lower left and lower right corners. To the left margin, a small watermark area displays a pineapple motif in pale green, consistent with the watermark visible when the note is held to light. Bands of fine guilloche border the upper and lower edges of the reverse, echoing the front design, and the overall tonal warmth of the brown engraving palette gives the reverse a distinguished, authoritative appearance.
