100 Kwacha Zambian Kwacha (Issued 1992-2011)
Pale rose and soft lilac dominate the colour palette of this 100 Kwacha banknote, with deeper violet and purple tones anchoring the lower register and a warm golden-amber band sweeping across the central and right-hand portions of the design. These warm pinks and muted purples were characteristic choices of the Bank of Zambia’s print programme during the early 1990s, lending the note a distinctive warmth whilst allowing intaglio engraving and guilloché patterning to remain clearly legible against the background. The interplay of rose, gold and violet reflects the layered security printing techniques employed during this period, when Zambia’s notes were produced to De La Rue standards at a time of significant monetary change.
On the front, the note is immediately dominated by a finely engraved African Fish Eagle perched on a branch at the right of the composition, rendered in rich purple-blue intaglio with exceptional detail in the plumage — the bird’s white head and dark body feathers are carefully delineated, and it sits facing left in a commanding pose entirely appropriate to Zambia’s national symbol. To the upper left, the text “BANK OF ZAMBIA” is printed in bold, prominent lettering, with the denomination declared centrally in large serif type reading “ONE HUNDRED KWACHA.” Above and to the left, the denomination indicator “K100” appears in bold block lettering. The promise text “I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND” is printed in small but clear lettering, followed by “FOR THE BANK OF ZAMBIA,” with a Governor’s signature appearing below. A vertical serial number “C/57258125” runs along the left-hand side in red, with a second serial number repeated horizontally along the lower portion of the note. To the far left, a pale intaglio vignette features a flying dove, and below this sits a circular purple seal bearing the text “ZAMBIA” and the year “1992,” enclosing the Zambian coat of arms. Fine guilloché rosette patterns and geometric wave elements fill the background across the full face of the note, with a vertical security thread visible embedded within the paper. The lower-right corner repeats the “K100” denomination indicator.
The reverse presents a vivid and deeply engraved scene centred on Victoria Falls, with the cascade of water rendered in fine intaglio line work that conveys both movement and volume. To the left of the waterfall, a large and imposing close-up portrait of an African Buffalo’s head is engraved in dark purple-violet, its horns and heavy facial features executed with exceptional precision and texture. To the right of the falls stands an engraved sculptural figure — a human form with arms raised, appearing to represent a freedom or independence statue — positioned against the falling water. A small flying dove appears to the right, echoing the motif seen on the front. The “BANK OF ZAMBIA” header appears at the top in bold lettering, flanked by “K100” at the upper left and an ornate oval cartouche bearing “K100” at the upper right in a darker violet. The words “ONE HUNDRED KWACHA” are printed in the lower-left corner in clear serif text. Background guilloché patterns in warm ochre and rose tones fill the margins, and the printer’s imprint “THOMAS DE LA RUE AND COMPANY LIMITED” is visible in small text along the lower edge, confirming the high-security production provenance of this issue.
