1 Cuban Pesos Banknote (Jose Marti)

1 Peso Peso (Issued 2006-2020)

The 1 Cuban Peso banknote of the 2004–2025 Modern Peso Issue remains current legal tender in Cuba, forming a cornerstone of everyday domestic transactions on the island. Printed across multiple years within the series, the specific example shown bears the year date 2007, representing one of the annual printings that sustained this denomination throughout its long run of issue. Cuba’s dual-currency system, which ran alongside the convertible peso (CUC), defined much of the economic landscape in which this note circulated, and the subsequent monetary unification of 2021 brought significant changes to Cuban currency arrangements. Travellers and Cuban nationals holding these notes should be aware of the current status of Cuban monetary policy when seeking to exchange them abroad.

On the front, the dominant feature is the engraved portrait of José Martí, the celebrated Cuban poet, philosopher, and independence hero, positioned to the right of centre against a finely worked guilloché background rendered in olive-green and pale yellow tones. Martí is depicted in a formal dark jacket with a high collar, his moustache and composed expression rendered with considerable engraving detail, and his name is printed clearly beneath the portrait in bold capital letters reading “JOSE MARTI”. The issuing authority, “BANCO CENTRAL DE CUBA”, is printed in a bold serif typeface across the top of the note in dark ink, while the denomination “1 PESO” appears in large numerals and text centrally on the face. To the left of centre sits a decorative panel featuring an interlocking geometric motif framed by fine line borders, and the serial number 455714 appears twice in red ink — once to the upper left and once to the upper centre — accompanied by the series prefix “GH-05” printed in red to the left and repeated in a darker tone to the lower right alongside the initials “BCC”. The year date “AÑO 2007” is printed in small text to the upper right and lower left. A signature line runs below the central denomination panel, accompanied by the caption “PRESIDENTE DEL BANCO”. A small circular vignette in the lower left corner features a secondary numeral “1” within an ornate frame, and the overall colour palette of the front blends warm olive-green guilloché patterning with dark blue-grey engraving.

The reverse is printed predominantly in dark blue-grey and black ink and bears the text “REPÚBLICA DE CUBA” in bold capital lettering across the upper portion of the note. The central vignette is a large, detailed engraved scene depicting a historical gathering, identified by a caption at the lower left reading “ENTRADA DE LA HABANA EL EJÉRCITO LIBERTADOR 1899”, which commemorates the entry of the Liberation Army into Havana in 1899. The scene shows a crowd of figures, some on horseback and some standing, rendered with considerable fine-line engraving detail, with a central figure raised above the crowd in a posture of address or celebration. Behind the figures, multi-storey buildings and urban architecture are faintly visible, giving the scene historical and geographical context. The numeral “1” appears in the upper left and lower right corners of the reverse in a decorative numeral style consistent with the front, and fine border patterning frames the overall composition. The paper shows a subtle texture consistent with the cotton-blend substrate typical of Cuban banknote production of this period.
