100 Pesos Peso (Issued 2004-2024)
The 100 Pesos banknote issued by the Banco Central de Cuba remains current legal tender within Cuba’s peso monetary system, having been in continuous circulation since its introduction in 2004 as part of the modern peso issue series. Cuba operates a dual-currency context, and this peso denomination serves the domestic economy. The note carries the year 2004 on its face as the series date, with examples circulating through to 2024 under the same basic design. It represents one of the higher-value denominations in everyday Cuban peso circulation.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, the nineteenth-century Cuban independence leader and founding father known as the “Father of the Homeland,” positioned to the right of centre against a warm crimson and rose-red background. His name is printed clearly beneath the portrait in small serif lettering: “CARLOS MANUEL DE CÉSPEDES.” The issuing authority is declared prominently along the top of the note in bold serif capitals: “BANCO CENTRAL DE CUBA.” The denomination is stated centrally in large serif text reading “CIEN PESOS,” and the numeral “100” appears in the lower left corner in bold figures. The year “AÑO 2004” is printed in the lower left field. A serial number, rendered in blue-green ink, appears twice — once in the upper left and once centrally below the portrait — with the example shown reading “213230,” preceded by the prefix “AC-11.” A rectangular security feature or registration element in a darker crimson tone sits to the left of centre, bearing a geometric interlocking pattern. The background incorporates intricate guilloché lacework in pale red and rose tones, with a faint watermark portrait visible through the paper in the central field. A facsimile signature appears below the serial number with the title “PRESIDENTE DEL BANCO” printed beneath it. The paper carries fine multicolour security fibres embedded throughout.
The reverse is printed predominantly in deep crimson and rose-red tones and features a detailed engraved scene of the Tribuna Antimperialista “José Martí” in Havana, a large open plaza used for public gatherings. A standing figure, rendered in strong engraved linework, is depicted to the left of the composition with one arm raised and outstretched in a rhetorical or oratory pose, appearing to address a crowd. Behind this figure, a series of tall arched structural frames or scaffolding elements recede into the distance, creating strong perspective across the mid-ground and background of the scene. The text “TRIBUNA ANTIMPERIALISTA ‘JOSÉ MARTÍ'” and “CIUDAD DE LA HABANA” are printed in a caption panel at the base of the central image. The header along the top reads “REPÚBLICA DE CUBA” in bold serif capitals. The numeral “100” appears in the upper left corner and again within a decorative rosette in the lower right. A vertical security thread is visible on the right side of the note. Fine guilloché border patterns frame the entire composition, and pale wave-form lathe-work patterns are visible in the background fields to either side of the central scene.
