200 Pesos Peso (Issued 2010-2024)

Cuba’s peso economy has long been shaped by the island’s sugar industry, tobacco exports, nickel mining, and a growing tourism sector, with domestic transactions of this scale underpinning everything from state enterprise payments to agricultural commerce. The 200 Peso denomination represents one of the higher-value notes in general Cuban circulation, used for significant everyday purchases and institutional transactions throughout the island. Issued under the Banco Central de Cuba from 2010 through to 2024, this note belongs to the Modern Peso Issue series and remains current legal tender. Its continued use reflects the sustained role of cash in Cuba’s managed economy.

On the front, the note is dominated by a portrait of Frank País, the young revolutionary leader and key organiser of the urban underground movement during the Cuban Revolution, whose name is printed in clear serif lettering at the lower right of the portrait. The portrait is rendered in a detailed intaglio engraving style, showing País as a young man with short dark hair and a direct, composed expression, set against a warm orange and tan background. The issuing authority is prominently declared at the top of the note in bold serif capitals reading “BANCO CENTRAL DE CUBA,” printed in deep red-orange ink. The central denomination text reads “DOSCIENTOS PESOS” in large bold typography, positioned in the middle of the note. To the left of centre, a rectangular security element is visible, printed in orange tones with a repeated geometric pattern that creates an optical guilloche effect. The serial number 288519 appears twice — once in red at the upper left and again in black at the lower centre — alongside the prefix “HA-03” printed in red, which appears both to the left of centre and below the central text. The year “AÑO 2010” is printed in small text near the upper right and again at the lower left, flanking the large numeral “200” rendered in bold orange at the lower left corner. The abbreviation “BCC” appears in a stylised orange block to the right of the portrait, and a facsimile signature above the title “PRESIDENTE DEL BANCO” is printed in black ink at the lower centre of the note. The overall colour scheme is a warm amber and burnt orange palette on a cream paper ground, with fine background guilloché patterns running across the entire face of the note.

The reverse is printed in a single warm amber-brown tone on cream paper and features a highly detailed architectural engraving of the Ciudad Escolar 26 de Julio — the 26th of July School City — a large educational complex of considerable symbolic importance in revolutionary Cuba. The engraving depicts the main multi-storey building of the complex rendered with careful line work, showing windows, architectural detailing, and a large numeral “26” visible on the upper facade of the central structure. Flanking the building are tall palm trees to the left and a mix of tropical trees and low-rise structures to the right, all rendered in the same fine intaglio brown line engraving. A broad plaza or open foreground area leads the eye toward the building, giving the composition a sense of depth and civic grandeur. The legend “CIUDAD ESCOLAR 26 DE JULIO” is printed in clear serif lettering along the lower centre of the reverse, identifying the depicted site. At the top of the reverse, the text “REPÚBLICA DE CUBA” is printed in bold serif capitals, and the denomination numeral “200” appears at both the upper left and lower right corners. Fine guilloché border patterns frame the entire reverse composition, adding both decorative quality and a security function to the note’s design.
