20 Rupees Rupee (Issued 2009-2010)

The 20 Rupees banknote issued by Nepal Rastra Bank in 2009–2010 remains current legal tender in Nepal, forming part of the ongoing series of Nepali Rupee notes that continues to circulate throughout the country. This particular issue was produced during a period of gradual modernisation of Nepal’s currency design programme, retaining strong national imagery that reflects the country’s natural heritage and geographic identity. The note carries the authority of Nepal Rastra Bank and bears the signatures and inscriptions consistent with the bank’s standard issue format. Travellers and visitors returning from Nepal may find themselves holding this denomination alongside other Rupee notes from the same series.

On the front, the note is dominated by a rich, warm red and crimson colour palette set against a lighter pinkish-cream background, with decorative guilloché patterning forming an intricate border that frames the entire composition. To the left of centre, a finely engraved depiction of Mount Everest — Nepal’s most iconic geographical feature — rises dramatically, rendered with considerable detail in deep red intaglio engraving that captures the mountain’s sharp ridgelines and snow-covered peak. To the right of centre, a tall ornamental structure that appears to be a stylised tower or minaret is depicted in a lighter, more delicate engraving style against the pale background. At the top centre, the issuing authority is printed in Devanagari script as “नेपाल राष्ट्र बैंक” (Nepal Rastra Bank), preceded by the honorific “श्री”, with additional Devanagari text below giving the standard legal declaration of the note’s value and the backing of the Government of Nepal. The denomination is stated prominently in Devanagari script as “रुपैयाँ बीस” (Rupees Twenty) in bold dark red lettering at the centre of the note, with the instruction “तुरुन्त पाइदछ” printed beneath it. The serial number “घ/२९ ७०३२१७” appears in mirror orientation at the lower left and right of the note, printed in dark red, flanked by ornamental scroll motifs in the corners. A circular seal of Nepal Rastra Bank is visible towards the upper right of the note. A signature line appears below the central text area, accompanied by the text “काजू गभर्नर” denoting the acting governor. The border design incorporates repeated decorative floral and geometric motifs in the guilloché tradition, with small stylised peacock or bird motifs visible at the top corners of the note’s frame.

The reverse of the note continues in the same warm red and pale pink-cream colour scheme, with a broad decorative border incorporating floral and scroll elements at the corners and sides. At the centre of the composition stands a fine engraving of a deer — specifically identifiable as a barasingha, or swamp deer, characterised by its large, multi-tined antlers — depicted standing full-body on grassland. Behind the deer, a lightly engraved pastoral landscape is visible, featuring trees and what appears to be a mountain range rendered in pale watermark-style tones in the background. To the upper left of the central image, an arched architectural element frames the composition, suggesting a traditional Nepali decorative motif. At the top centre of the reverse, the Government of Nepal emblem — a circular seal bearing the national coat of arms — is printed in red. The denomination is stated twice: in Devanagari script as “रुपैयाँ बीस” on the lower left and in English as “RUPEES TWENTY” in bold serif capitals on the lower right, both printed in dark red. The numeral “20” appears in the upper left and upper right corners of the reverse in bold red numerals. The overall engraving on the reverse is precise and detailed, with fine line work used throughout the wildlife illustration to create depth and texture in the deer’s coat and the surrounding landscape.
