10 Naira Naira (Issued 2006-2009)
Nigeria’s economy in the mid-2000s was undergoing significant transformation, driven by rising global oil prices that swelled government revenues and funded major infrastructure programmes across the country. The 10 Naira note circulated widely during this period, facilitating everyday transactions in markets, transport networks, and small-scale trade that formed the backbone of Nigerian commerce. Agricultural goods, textiles, and food staples moved through local economies in denominations precisely like this one, making the note a practical instrument of daily life for millions of Nigerians from Lagos to Kano.
On the front, the note is dominated by a finely engraved portrait of Alvan Ikoku (1900–1971), the renowned Nigerian educator and nationalist, positioned to the left of centre against a warm coral and terracotta background. The portrait is rendered with considerable intaglio detail, capturing his round-framed spectacles, formal suit, and composed expression with precision and depth. Across the upper portion, the issuing authority is clearly printed in bold serif lettering reading “CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA”, accompanied by the Nigerian coat of arms to the right. The denomination “TEN NAIRA” is printed centrally in bold capital letters, flanked by an intricate geometric and guilloché rosette pattern rendered in deeper red-brown tones, which features a symmetrical eight-pointed star-like design. The large numeral “10” appears prominently in the upper right corner in a deep crimson red, and again in the lower left in the same style. The serial number “BR3998804” appears twice — once vertically along the left margin and once horizontally along the lower right — in dark brown ink. The year “2006” is printed in small text on the lower left side. Two facsimile signatures appear at the bottom of the note: that of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on the left, and the Director of Currency and Branch Operations on the right. A vertical security strip is embedded within the paper, visible as a faint line running through the body of the note. The overall ground print features a repeating fine-line guilloché pattern providing depth and anti-counterfeiting texture across the salmon-orange field.
The reverse is presented in a warm terracotta and pale cream palette, and features a finely detailed engraved vignette of two women carrying large rounded basins balanced on their heads, a scene evoking traditional Nigerian market life and trade. The figures are rendered with skilled intaglio line work, with woven headbands and patterned clothing visible in the engraving. To the upper left, a colour map of Nigeria is depicted in the green and white of the national flag, clearly outlined with bold borders. The text “CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA” runs across the top in serif lettering. The denomination is expressed multilingually, with “Naira Goma” in the upper left area, “Naira Iri” to the upper right, and “Náírà Méwàá” across the central lower section — reflecting Nigeria’s linguistic diversity in Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba respectively. “TEN NAIRA” is printed in bold beneath the central vignette. The large numeral “10” appears in deep brown-red in both the upper right and lower left corners. To the lower right of the central scene, a circular emblem featuring what appears to be the Central Bank of Nigeria’s seal or security rosette with fine radial line work is visible. The border regions of the reverse carry a repeating vertical line pattern in pale orange, framing the composition on both sides.
