20 Rials Rial Omani (Issued 2000)

Oman’s economy at the turn of the millennium was driven by petroleum exports, a rapidly expanding port infrastructure, and growing financial services centred on Muscat, all of which depended on a stable, trusted currency to facilitate domestic commerce and international trade settlement. The Rial Omani had long been regarded as one of the strongest and most stable currencies in the Gulf region, underpinned by disciplined monetary policy from the Central Bank of Oman. The 20 Rials denomination represented significant purchasing power in everyday Omani life and was routinely used in the higher-value transactions that accompanied the country’s oil-driven prosperity. Issued in the year 2000, this note commemorates a period of considerable infrastructural and economic ambition under the sultanate.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the late ruler of Oman who presided over the country’s modern renaissance from 1970 until his passing in 2020. The portrait is positioned to the right of centre, rendered with precise intaglio engraving that captures the Sultan in traditional Omani dress, including a white turban, and showing his characteristic greying beard with great clarity and depth of tone. The background behind the portrait features an architectural illustration of what appears to be Al Alam Palace or a significant Muscat governmental building, depicted in fine line engraving with pale blue and ivory tones. To the upper left, the Oman national emblem — the khanjar dagger with two crossed swords — appears prominently, and the issuing authority is identified in bold Arabic script as البنك المركزي العُماني, meaning the Central Bank of Oman. The denomination is stated in Arabic numerals and Arabic script reading “عشرون ريالاً” (twenty rials), rendered in deep green. A serial number appears twice on the face of the note in red numerals, with the format visible as a combination of letters and digits. The colour palette of the front is a sophisticated blend of blue, green, and pale gold, with intricate guilloché patterning forming decorative oval and geometric frames around the central vignettes. To the left margin, three horizontal bars serve as a denomination indicator for the visually impaired. A vertical security strip is embedded near the right edge of the note, and the right border features a repeating decorative column of khanjar emblems in teal and dark blue, forming a striking side panel. Facsimile signatures of the authorising officials of the Central Bank appear in the lower central portion of the note. The text “سلطان عُمان” (Sultan of Oman) appears beneath the signature area in Arabic script.

The reverse presents a bold and detailed composition dominated by a large architectural engraving of the Central Bank of Oman headquarters building, depicted in a formal intaglio style with strong vertical lines and arched window detailing that emphasises the institution’s grandeur. The building is shown in pale ivory and grey-green tones against a lightly coloured background. To the right of the central building illustration, an aerial or elevated landscape view of what appears to be the port and industrial zone of Mina Sultan Qaboos or a comparable Omani development stretches across the mid-section of the note, rendered in warm pink, ochre, and pale purple tones that suggest the sun-drenched terrain of the Omani coastline. A circular vignette in the upper right corner contains a smaller engraved image of a separate building, possibly an official government structure. The text “CENTRAL BANK OF OMAN” is printed in clear, bold serif typography across the upper portion of the reverse, and “TWENTY RIALS” appears in equally prominent lettering along the lower register. The denomination numeral “20” appears in the lower right corner within a decorative frame incorporating guilloché work, and a further “20” numeral is visible in the upper left. Ornate floral and scroll engraving borders the left edge of the reverse, complementing the formal architectural imagery. A small Arabic date notation referencing the Hijri year is also visible in the central lower area of the note.
