100 Baisa Rial Omani (Issued 1995)

The Central Bank of Oman, established in 1974 as the sovereign monetary authority of the Sultanate, has been responsible for issuing and regulating the Rial Omani since its introduction, replacing the earlier Gulf Rupee and the Saidi Rial as the country modernised its financial infrastructure. Operating under the guidance of the ruling Sultanate, the Central Bank has consistently produced banknotes that reflect Oman’s cultural heritage, natural environment, and national identity. The 100 Baisa note of the 1995 issue represents a modest yet significant denomination within the Omani monetary system, serving everyday transactional purposes. That such careful design was applied even to this lower denomination speaks to the Central Bank’s commitment to quality and national pride across the full range of its currency.

On the front, the dominant feature is a portrait of Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, the long-ruling Sultan of Oman who modernised the country across his five-decade reign, depicted in the right-hand portion of the note wearing a traditional Omani turban in rich burgundy and gold tones. His image is rendered in fine intaglio-style engraving with considerable tonal depth, presenting a formal yet composed likeness against a background of fine geometric and guilloché latticework in shades of purple and violet. To the left of the portrait, a central vignette depicts a traditional Omani falaj irrigation channel — the ancient system of water management still integral to Oman’s agricultural heritage — rendered in green and earthy tones with palm trees visible along the canal’s edge against an open landscape. The upper portion of the note carries the bank’s name in Arabic script, البنك المركزي العُماني, accompanied by a line of Arabic text constituting the legal tender declaration. The denomination is printed prominently in stylised Arabic-Indic numerals reading ١٠٠ in the lower centre, alongside the text “سلطان عُمان” and the dual date notation ١٤١٦ هـ / ١٩٩٥م, reflecting both the Hijri and Gregorian calendars. The serial number ج/١ ٣١٩٩٦٠٣ appears twice in dark ink, once in the upper right and once in the lower left. A green security thread is embedded within the paper, visible as a windowed strip running vertically through the note’s body. The overall colour palette of the front combines warm sandy tones, soft greens, and muted purples, unified by intricate background guillochés that provide both aesthetic elegance and anti-counterfeiting protection.

The reverse of the note is composed in a predominantly green and purple colour scheme and celebrates Oman’s native wildlife with striking clarity. The central and left sections feature a large, finely detailed illustration of a Steppe Eagle — rendered in deep green and dark olive tones — perched in a commanding pose that dominates the lower left area of the design. Above and behind the eagle, a group of white egrets or herons are depicted in flight and at rest amongst foliage, their white forms contrasting crisply against the background. To the right of centre, an Arabian Oryx stands in profile, its white coat and long straight horns immediately identifiable as the iconic national animal of Oman, rendered with careful naturalistic detail. Behind the oryx, a smaller gazelle is depicted in lighter tones, and to the far right, a stylised traditional Omani tower or fortification is printed in purple, referencing the country’s historic defensive architecture. The text “CENTRAL BANK OF OMAN” appears in bold serif capitals across the upper portion of the reverse, with “One Hundred Baisa” printed in clear purple type directly beneath it. The numeral “100” is set in large bold purple type in the upper right corner. Along the left edge, the denomination “100” is printed vertically in green. Decorative geometric border patterns frame the note on all sides, incorporating repeating diamond and interlocking shapes in teal and green tones. The date reference “1416 H / 1995 G” appears in small text near the lower right margin, confirming the dual-calendar dating convention used throughout this issue.
