10,000 So’m Som (Issued 2021)

Ko’kaldosh Madrasasi — the great sixteenth-century madrassa standing in the heart of Tashkent — takes pride of place on the 10,000 So’m banknote issued by the Central Bank of Uzbekistan in 2021. Built during the reign of Abdullakhan II and one of the most recognisable examples of Central Asian Islamic architecture, the madrassa was chosen as a symbol of Uzbekistan’s deep scholarly and spiritual heritage along the ancient Silk Road. Its presence on the highest-denomination note in everyday circulation underscores the importance the republic places on its architectural patrimony. The building’s distinctive portal, arched niches, and decorative tilework are rendered with striking clarity in the engraved central vignette.

On the front, the Ko’kaldosh Madrasasi dominates the central field, depicted within a large diamond-shaped engraved cartouche framed by fine guilloché line work in shades of blue, violet, and pale gold. The facade of the madrassa is shown in detailed intaglio engraving, capturing its monumental iwan portal, flanking arcades, and the characteristic geometric tilework of its upper register. A caption in Latin-script Uzbek text reading “Ko’kaldosh Madrasasi, Toshkent” appears beneath the central vignette. Along the top of the note, the issuing authority name — rendered in Latin-script text as “O’zbekiston Respublikasi Markaziy Banki” — is printed in dark blue across a clean background. The denomination “10000” appears prominently in the upper left in large bold numerals, and the denomination text “O’N MING SO’M” is printed in the lower left. A serial number reading “DC0001333” appears both vertically along the left side and horizontally in the lower right. The right-hand portion of the note features a bold multi-coloured security stripe incorporating holographic elements with an iridescent blue-to-gold shift, embedded with the letters “UZB” repeating vertically. The state emblem of Uzbekistan — a circular seal featuring a rising sun, mountains, and wheat sheaves — appears in the upper right corner. Pale lavender and blue guilloché rosettes and wave patterns fill the background field. A legal tender text in Latin-script Uzbek is printed in three lines in the lower central area, advising that the note is obligatory for all payments throughout the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The reverse is dominated by a lavender and blue colour palette with warm salmon-pink tonal accents running across the upper and right portions of the note in diagonal band formations. The central image features a large, finely engraved ceramic vessel — a traditional Uzbek pottery jug of the type associated with ancient Silk Road craft traditions — rendered in intaglio in deep blue-violet tones, positioned to the right of centre with impressive three-dimensional relief detail. To its left, occupying the centre-left of the note, is an engraved landscape vignette depicting what appears to be an archaeological or mountain site with rocky terrain rendered in lighter blue-grey tones. A caption in Latin-script Uzbek text below the central field reads “Shoshtepa Arxeologiya Yodgorligi”, identifying the archaeological monument of Shoshtepa. The denomination numeral “10000” appears in bold dark blue in the lower left, and the text “O’N MING SO’M” is printed in the upper right in dark lettering. The issuing bank name “O’zbekiston Respublikasi Markaziy Banki” appears along the top edge, with the year “2021” printed below it on the left. A legal tender statement in Latin-script Uzbek runs along the lower edge. Fine guilloché background patterns in interlocking pale blue and pink rosette formations fill the remaining surface, and microprint security text is integrated into the design borders.
