5,000 So’m Som (Issued 2021)
The Sher-Dor Madrasah of Samarkand, one of the most celebrated monuments of Islamic architecture along the ancient Silk Road, takes centre stage on this 2021 issue of the 5,000 Som banknote from Uzbekistan. Constructed in the seventeenth century and forming part of the legendary Registan ensemble, the Sher-Dor Madrasah is among the most recognisable symbols of Uzbekistan’s cultural and historical identity. Its selection for this denomination reflects the Uzbek government’s deliberate policy of celebrating the country’s pre-eminent role as a crossroads of civilisation. The note belongs to the modern series issued by the Central Bank of Uzbekistan, characterised by vivid architectural imagery and sophisticated security printing.
On the front, the dominant feature is a detailed engraved vignette of the Sher-Dor Madrasah, depicted with considerable architectural precision and rendered in warm golden-brown and teal tones. The intricate tilework, the great arched portal, the flanking minarets, and the tiled dome are all discernible within the engraving, which is framed inside a bold hexagonal or polygonal geometric border in dark green and gold. To the upper left of the vignette, a small heraldic lion figure in gold references the madrasah’s famous mosaic decoration. The background of the note is executed in pale green and aquamarine tones, overlaid with fine guilloché latticework and geometric diamond patterns that extend across the full width of the note, creating a layered, iridescent quality typical of modern security printing. In the upper left corner, the denomination figure “5000” appears in bold dark numerals, while the lower left carries the denomination spelled out in Uzbek Latin script text reading “BESH MING SO’M” in blue block lettering. The issuing authority’s name — rendered in Latin script as “O’ZBEKISTON RESPUBLIKASI MARKAZIY BANKI” — runs across the top of the note in dark lettering. Directly beneath the central vignette, caption text in Latin script identifies the building as “SHERDO’R MADRASASI SAMARQAND.” A secondary text panel in Latin script below this contains a legal tender notice. The serial number “CB0076825” appears twice: once in the lower-right field in teal, and once vertically on the left margin. On the right side, a wide vertical security strip is visible, incorporating colour-shifting or optically variable elements alongside a repeated ghost image of the serial number. The national emblem of Uzbekistan, rendered as a circular seal, is printed in the upper right corner. The overall colour palette of the front transitions from warm amber and brown in the central vignette to pale aquamarine and green across the wings of the note.
The reverse of the note is dominated by a richly detailed illustration of archaeological artefacts associated with the ancient city of Afrosiyob, located near Samarkand, identified by caption text in Latin script reading “AFROSIYOB ARXEOLOGIYA YODGORLIGI.” Two ceramic vessels are depicted with considerable artistic precision: a large decorated bowl featuring intricate zoomorphic and geometric motifs, including an animal figure rendered in the Sogdian artistic tradition, and a substantial rounded pottery vessel or jar with ornamental relief decoration. Both objects are rendered in deep burgundy-red and warm brown tones against a pale background. To the left of the ceramic artefacts, a softly rendered landscape vignette in muted green tones depicts the open archaeological terrain of the Afrosiyob site, with low rolling hills and earthen contours suggesting an excavation landscape. The denomination “5000” appears prominently in the lower right in large bold dark numerals. In the upper right, the denomination in Latin script text reads “BESH MING SO’M.” The issuing bank name in Latin script — “O’ZBEKISTON RESPUBLIKASI MARKAZIY BANKI” — runs across the upper portion of the reverse, with the year “2021” positioned in the upper left. A legal notice in Latin script text appears along the lower margin. Fine guilloché background patterns in pale green and cream cover the right-hand portion of the reverse, providing a security printing ground. A diagonal security stripe is visible running from the upper area towards the lower left.
