2,000 So’m Som (Issued 2021)

The Bukhara Ark, one of Central Asia’s most formidable ancient citadels and a symbol of Uzbekistan’s millennia-old urban civilisation, takes centre stage on the 2,000 So’m banknote issued in 2021 by the Central Bank of Uzbekistan. Rising above the historic city of Bukhara along the Silk Road trade routes, the Ark fortress served for centuries as the seat of the ruling emirs and remains one of the most recognised monuments in the country. Its inclusion on this denomination reflects Uzbekistan’s national commitment to celebrating its pre-eminent architectural and cultural heritage. The note belongs to the Modern Silk Road Series, which draws together imagery from across the country’s storied history.

On the front, the dominant central image is an engraved depiction of the Bukhara Ark, rendered with considerable architectural precision in deep terracotta and brick-red tones against a warm rose and salmon-pink background. The fortress is shown from a low frontal perspective, revealing its imposing tapering towers, arched gateway, and layered defensive mud-brick walls, with the label “BUXORO ARK” printed beneath the vignette in small Latin-script text. To the upper left, a stylised dragon or mythical creature motif is visible in blue and teal, adding a decorative flourish consistent with the Silk Road artistic tradition. The issuing authority is named in full along the upper portion of the note in bold Latin-script lettering reading “O’ZBEKISTON RESPUBLIKASI MARKAZIY BANKI”, flanked on the right by the national emblem of Uzbekistan — a circular seal rendered in red featuring a rising sun, ears of wheat, and a cotton flower. The denomination appears prominently in two locations: “2000” in large numerals to the lower right in deep red, and the written form “IKKI MING SO’M” in the lower left corner in bold type. A serial number, “BB0064801”, is printed twice — once vertically along the left edge in dark ink and once horizontally to the right of centre. The background of the note incorporates a relief map of Uzbekistan in pale teal to the right of centre, overlaid with fine guilloché patterns and geometric latticework in light pink and cream tones. A small block of Latin-script legal tender text is visible along the lower centre. The overall colour palette of the front transitions from deep terracotta and brick-red in the central vignette through softer rose tones to pale pink and cream towards the edges, giving the note a warm, cohesive appearance.

The reverse presents a two-part composition that combines an archaeological landscape on the left with a striking figurative sculpture on the right. The left portion features an engraved vignette of the Poykend Archaeological Site, labelled in small Latin-script text as “POYKEND ARXEOLOGIYA YODGORLIGI”, depicting rocky outcrops and ruins rendered in warm ochre and orange-brown tones against a pale background. To the right, the dominant image is a detailed engraving of an ancient female figurine, styled in the manner of a classical Sogdian or early Central Asian deity figure — she is depicted with an elaborate headdress, stylised wings spread to either side, and both hands resting upon a large decorated vessel or urn below her. This sculpture is rendered in deep reddish-brown engraving of high technical quality, with fine crosshatching and line work conveying the three-dimensional form of the original artefact. The issuing authority “O’ZBEKISTON RESPUBLIKASI MARKAZIY BANKI” is again printed in full along the top of the reverse in dark text, with the year “2021” to the upper left. The denomination “IKKI MING SO’M” appears in the upper right corner, and the numeral “2000” is printed in large bold figures to the lower left. A line of small Latin-script legal tender text runs along the lower edge of the note. The background incorporates subtle guilloché patterning in pale rose and cream tones, consistent with the front design, and a decorative hexagonal border element is visible near the upper right.
