100 Ðồng Dong (Issued 1991)

The 100 Ðồng banknote issued in 1991 by the State Bank of Vietnam was withdrawn from circulation as part of Vietnam’s broader monetary reforms during the 1990s, a period in which the country sought to stabilise its currency following the economic disruptions of the doi moi transition era. Hyperinflationary pressures throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s made lower-denomination notes such as this one increasingly impractical for everyday transactions, as the purchasing power of the dong eroded significantly. The note ceased to be legal tender as higher-denomination issues progressively replaced the smaller values in active circulation. Today it serves as a tangible record of Vietnam’s post-reunification monetary history.

On the front, the note is dominated by a broadly horizontal layout rendered in soft greens, yellows, and muted purples, with the central field occupied by a large, bold denomination inscription in Latin-script text reading “MOT TRAM DONG”, meaning one hundred dong, printed in dark brown or near-black ink with strong visual prominence. To the upper left, the national emblem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is displayed — a circular device featuring a red field with a five-pointed gold star at its centre, framed by a wreath of rice ears and a cog at the base, all rendered in fine intaglio engraving. The issuing authority is identified along the top edge in Latin-script text reading “CONG HOA XA HOI CHU NGHIA VIET NAM”, the full formal name of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. A serial number, reading AH 2539331, is printed in red ink in the upper central field. The numeral “100” appears in multiple locations: prominently in the upper right corner, in the lower left, and also woven into a large guilloché rosette at the centre-right of the note, where concentric geometric patterns in blue and gold create an intricate security background. Decorative corner motifs featuring scrollwork and stylised floral elements appear at all four corners, printed in deep purple-brown. The year “1991” is printed in small text near the lower centre. The overall background is composed of fine multicoloured guilloché wave patterns in pale green and yellow, providing security depth to the paper surface.

The reverse of the note is printed primarily in blue-grey, brown, and olive tones and features a detailed engraved landscape scene depicting the Tran Quoc Pagoda, the ancient Buddhist tower situated on the West Lake in Hanoi. The pagoda is rendered with considerable fine-line engraving detail, showing its multi-tiered tower rising prominently at the centre of the composition, flanked by traditional Vietnamese pavilion structures and mature trees with broad, spreading canopies. Stone steps and a low wall or platform in the foreground anchor the composition, with the surrounding landscape suggesting the lakeside setting. To the left, a gateway or entrance arch is visible, and to the right, further pavilion structures complete the panoramic scene. The issuing bank name appears along the top edge in Latin-script text reading “NGAN HANG NHA NUOC VIET NAM”, identifying the State Bank of Vietnam. The numeral “100” is printed in the upper right and lower left corners in dark ink, and the denomination in text form, “MOT TRAM DONG”, is printed in a stacked arrangement to the lower right. Decorative border elements with scrollwork and stylised motifs frame the design on all sides, consistent in style with the obverse ornamentation.
