10,000 Ðồng Dong (Issued 2006-2025)

The offshore oil platform depicted on the reverse of this Vietnamese polymer banknote represents the Bach Ho oil field — the White Tiger field — situated in the South China Sea and one of the most strategically significant energy assets in Vietnam’s modern economic development. Discovered in the 1970s and brought into full production during the 1980s, the Bach Ho field transformed Vietnam into a notable oil-producing nation and became a cornerstone of the country’s industrial and export revenues. Its inclusion on the 10,000 Dong denomination reflects the State Bank of Vietnam’s deliberate choice to celebrate the nation’s natural resource wealth and technological advancement on everyday circulating currency. The polymer substrate, introduced progressively from 2003 onwards, was selected to extend note durability in Vietnam’s humid tropical climate.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Ho Chi Minh, the founding leader of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the most widely recognised political figure in the country’s modern history, positioned to the right of centre against a warm salmon and pale rose background. The portrait is rendered with considerable tonal depth, showing Ho Chi Minh in his characteristic appearance — a thin beard, calm and composed expression — set against fine cross-hatched engraving work that gives the image a sculptural quality. To the left of the portrait sits the national emblem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, a circular device incorporating a red background with a gold star at its centre, flanked by rice stalks and a cogwheel at the base, printed in green and gold tones. The denomination text appears in two forms: the numeral “10000” is printed in large bold numerals in the lower left quadrant in dark green, while the written Vietnamese denomination text — reading “Muoi Nghin Dong” in Latin-script Vietnamese — appears in a smaller serif typeface above the numeral block. Along the upper portion of the note, Latin-script text reads “Cong Hoa Xa Hoi Chu Nghia Viet Nam,” identifying the issuing state. A vertical serial number, “TE 06420827,” appears twice — once running vertically along the left edge and once horizontally along the lower right — printed in dark reddish-brown ink. The overall colour palette of the front is warm and predominantly salmon-pink with green and gold decorative elements. Guilloché patterning fills the background with delicate interlocking rosette and wave forms. On the right side of the note, a transparent polymer window with a printed circular optical security element is clearly visible, a feature inherent to the Guardian polymer substrate. A small iridescent security element appears near the lower left in the form of a square printed region with microprinting and colour-shift properties.

The reverse presents a detailed engraved illustration of an offshore oil drilling and production platform, identifiable as a depiction of the Bach Ho oil field infrastructure, set against a pale blue-green sea and sky. The platform complex shows multiple interconnected rigs, cranes, walkways, and industrial superstructures rendered in fine brown and olive-green line work, with a degree of technical precision that suggests the engraving was based on actual photographic reference material. A jetty or access bridge extends from the main platform structure towards the lower left of the image. The background carries pale guilloché wave patterns in light green, giving the note a maritime atmosphere consistent with the offshore subject matter. Along the top of the reverse, Latin-script Vietnamese text reads “Ngan Hang Nha Nuoc Viet Nam,” identifying the issuing institution as the State Bank of Vietnam. The denomination “10000” appears again in bold numerals in the lower right quadrant in dark reddish-brown, with the written form “Muoi Nghin Dong” printed to its left. The polymer window is again visible on the upper right side of the reverse, this time showing the reverse face of the circular transparent security feature. Subtle microprinting and fine background tint work in pale violet and green complete the security printing across the reverse field.
