10,000 Ðồng Dong (Issued 1990)

Ha Long Bay, one of Vietnam’s most celebrated natural landscapes, has long held a place of deep cultural significance for the Vietnamese people, embodying both the country’s natural splendour and its maritime heritage. The 10,000 Dong note issued in 1990 brings together this iconic scenery with the portrait of Ho Chi Minh, the revolutionary leader and founding father of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, whose image had become a symbol of national unity and socialist identity. Issued at a time of significant economic transition as Vietnam pursued its Doi Moi reform programme, the note reflects the visual language of the era’s state currency. The combination of patriotic imagery and natural grandeur made this high-denomination note instantly recognisable to the Vietnamese public.

On the front, the dominant feature is a right-facing portrait of Ho Chi Minh, rendered in fine intaglio engraving with careful attention to his distinctive long white beard and high-collared jacket. The portrait occupies the right-hand portion of the note against a warm green and yellow guilloché background, with intricate scrollwork and floral ornamental patterns extending across the field in shades of olive green and gold. At the upper left, the state emblem of Vietnam — a circular device featuring a golden star above a cogwheel and rice sheaves on a red background — is printed in crisp detail. The issuing authority name, reading in Latin script as “Cong Hoa Xa Hoi Chu Nghia Viet Nam” (the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), appears in bold red lettering across the upper portion of the note. The denomination “10000” is displayed prominently in the upper right corner in red numerals, and is repeated in large red text reading “10000 MUOI NGHIN DONG” across the lower centre of the note, with the word denomination printed in Latin-script Vietnamese. The serial number “DF 2480025” appears twice — once in the upper left area and again in the lower right — in dark printed numerals. The year “1990” is printed in small numerals at the lower left. The overall colour palette of the front combines lime green, pale yellow, and red, creating a vivid and distinctive appearance.

The reverse presents a richly detailed engraved scene depicting traditional Vietnamese sailing junks on Ha Long Bay, their tall multi-sailed rigs rendered with fine crosshatching against a sky of light cloud and distant karst limestone formations rising dramatically from the water. The central composition shows two or three junks under full sail in the foreground, with the characteristic silhouettes of the bay’s rocky outcrops receding into the background. This entire scene is printed in a warm reddish-brown and terracotta palette, with guilloché border patterns framing the image on all sides. The text “NGAN HANG NHA NUOC VIET NAM” (State Bank of Vietnam) appears in Latin-script lettering across the upper portion of the reverse in red. The denomination “10000” is shown in the upper right corner, while “MUOI NGHIN DONG” is printed in bold red lettering across the lower edge. Ornamental rosette and scroll motifs appear in the lower corners, and a circular geometric security rosette is visible to the lower right. The paper exhibits a light cream tone, and evidence of a watermark area can be observed to the right of the central vignette.
