100,000 Ðồng Dong (Issued 2004-2025)

Introduced during the presidency of Tran Duc Luong and remaining in circulation through subsequent administrations under the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the 100,000 Dong polymer banknote entered circulation in 2004 as part of a sweeping modernisation of Vietnam’s currency infrastructure. The transition from paper to polymer substrate marked one of the most significant reforms to Vietnamese banknote production in the post-Doi Moi economic era, reflecting the country’s rapid integration into global trade and finance. Printed on polymer rather than cotton-fibre paper, the note offers substantially enhanced durability and resistance to counterfeiting, positioning it as a flagship denomination in everyday Vietnamese commerce. It remains legal tender to this day and is among the most widely circulated banknotes in the Vietnamese economy.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Ho Chi Minh, the revolutionary leader and founding father of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, positioned to the right of centre. The portrait is rendered in dark olive and brown intaglio engraving, capturing his characteristic thin beard, calm expression, and high-collared jacket in considerable detail. The background of the note is a soft, luminous green, overlaid with intricate guilloché rosette patterns and fine latticework that give the surface a layered, textured quality. To the upper centre, Latin-script text reads “CONG HOA XA HOI CHU NGHIA VIET NAM” — the official name of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in its romanised form — printed in dark lettering against the light ground. Below this, “VIET NAM” appears prominently. The national emblem of Vietnam, a circular device featuring a red field with a golden star above a cog wheel and rice sheaves, is printed in full colour to the left of centre. To the left side of the note, the serial number “FE 04334631” is printed twice — once vertically in red along the left edge and once horizontally in black along the lower right — providing a dual-printed serial reference. The large bold numeral “100,000” appears in the lower left in red print, unmistakably stating the denomination. Above it, the denomination in Vietnamese script reads “MOT TRAM NGHIN DONG,” meaning one hundred thousand dong. A transparent polymer window is visible in the upper left area of the note, a core security feature of the polymer substrate, which is clear and unprinted, allowing light to pass through. A small diamond-shaped optically variable device or printed security element appears to the right of the portrait in the upper corner. The polymer substrate itself is visible as a smooth, slightly glossy surface throughout.

The reverse of the note is dominated by a detailed engraved vignette depicting the Van Mieu, or Temple of Literature, located in Hanoi. The scene is rendered in fine green intaglio line engraving and shows the Khue Van Cac pavilion — a two-storey timber gateway structure with a tiled roof and ornamental circular windows — set within its surrounding courtyard and approached by a formal stone pathway with low balustrades on either side. Mature trees frame the composition to either side, and the rendering captures considerable architectural and botanical detail. The overall palette of the reverse is a delicate, uniform pale green, consistent with the front face. At the top of the reverse, Latin-script text reads “NGAN HANG NHA NUOC VIET NAM,” identifying the State Bank of Vietnam as the issuing authority. To the lower left, “MOT TRAM NGHIN DONG” reaffirms the denomination in full text, while the large bold numeral “100,000” is printed prominently to the lower right in dark ink. The denomination numeral “100000” also appears vertically along both the left and right edges of the note in a smaller, repeated format. A transparent polymer window is again visible in the upper left of the reverse. The background features repeated fine guilloché micropatterns and ghost watermark-style design elements across the field, including faint repeated architectural and geometric motifs that are characteristic of high-security polymer production.
