200,000 Ðồng Dong (Issued 2006-2022)

The State Bank of Vietnam, established in 1951 as the central monetary authority of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, has long served as the sole institution responsible for issuing currency, managing monetary policy, and maintaining financial stability across the country. Operating under the direction of the Vietnamese government, the bank oversees the entire lifecycle of banknote production, from design and security specification through to circulation and eventual withdrawal. The 200,000 Dong polymer note, introduced from 2006 and remaining legal tender through 2022, represents one of the most significant high-denomination issues in the bank’s modern series, printed on polymer substrate to enhance durability and security. Its continued circulation across this extended period reflects the State Bank’s commitment to producing notes capable of withstanding Vietnam’s tropical climate and high transaction volumes.

On the front, the central and dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Ho Chi Minh, the founding leader and revolutionary figure of modern Vietnam, rendered in detailed intaglio against a warm peach and salmon-toned background. His characteristic white beard and composed expression are depicted with considerable precision, the portrait occupying the right-centre of the note and surrounded by softly graduated guilloché patterning in pale orange and cream tones. To the upper left, Latin script text reads “Cong Hoa Xa Hoi Chu Nghia” above the larger bold text “Viet Nam”, identifying the issuing state as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The national emblem — a circular device featuring a red background with a gold star at its centre, framed by rice stalks and a cogwheel at the base — appears in the upper left quadrant. To the right of the portrait, a stylised lotus flower motif is printed in the upper right area, a recurring national symbol of Vietnam. The large bold denomination numerals “200,000” are printed prominently in the lower centre in deep red-brown ink, with the text “Hai Tram Nghin Dong” — the denomination in Vietnamese words — printed above in bold dark lettering. A transparent polymer window is visible on the left side of the note, incorporating an oval clear panel that forms part of the note’s inherent security architecture. The serial number “BK 06071327” appears twice — once vertically along the left margin in red and once horizontally in the lower right in matching red ink. A small diamond-shaped ornamental device appears in the lower left margin area, and fine background security printing in soft multicoloured guilloché fills the note’s surface throughout.

The reverse features a sweeping and vividly rendered landscape of Ha Long Bay, the UNESCO World Heritage Site located in north-eastern Vietnam, distinguished by its dramatic limestone karst formations rising steeply from calm waters. The central image depicts several of these towering rocky outcrops rendered in detailed intaglio, with colour shifting from deep blue-purple at the left through warm red-brown tones at the right, creating a striking chromatic contrast across the scene. A traditional Vietnamese sailing vessel is visible in the lower right portion of the water, adding scale and cultural context to the composition. The upper centre of the reverse carries the issuing bank name in Latin script: “Ngan Hang Nha Nuoc Viet Nam”, identifying the State Bank of Vietnam. The denomination “200,000” is printed in bold dark numerals to the upper left, while the words “Hai Tram Nghin Dong” appear in bold text in the lower centre of the note. A lotus flower motif is again present in the upper left area of the reverse. Multicoloured microprint security text bands run vertically along both the left and right margins, printed in alternating pink, gold, and green, forming dense repeated text patterns characteristic of modern polymer security printing. A transparent oval window is visible on the right side of the reverse, corresponding to the clear panel on the obverse. Background guilloché patterning in soft peach and cream tones fills the remainder of the note’s surface, and fine latent security print detail is present throughout the design field.
