2 Kwacha Zambian Kwacha (Issued 1980-1988)
Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s founding President and the architect of his self-styled philosophy of “Humanism,” presided over the nation throughout the entire period during which this banknote circulated. Having declared a one-party state under the United National Independence Party in 1972, Kaunda governed Zambia through a turbulent era of falling copper revenues, structural economic pressures, and regional instability linked to conflicts in neighbouring Angola and Zimbabwe. The 2 Kwacha note of this series reflects the visual language of state authority that characterised Zambian currency design under his long presidency. It remained in circulation until the broader monetary reforms of the late 1980s rendered earlier issues obsolete.
On the front, the dominant feature is an engraved portrait of Kenneth Kaunda positioned to the right of centre, rendered with fine intaglio line work that captures his broad, composed features and characteristic open-collared dress adorned with a beaded necklace. The overall colour palette of the front face is a warm pinkish-lilac, overlaid with pale guilloché patterning that fills the background with subtle geometric rosettes and interlocking curves. To the left of centre stands a finely engraved African fish eagle — Zambia’s national bird — perched upright on a rocky outcrop, its white head and dark-feathered body depicted with considerable detail. Beneath the eagle, a small vignette shows two human figures engaged in what appears to be a traditional activity beside stylised water waves, rendered in dark intaglio. The issuing authority is declared prominently at the top in bold serif capitals reading “BANK OF ZAMBIA,” with the denomination stated centrally as “TWO KWACHA” in large, authoritative lettering, accompanied by the promise text “I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND” and the words “FOR THE BANK OF ZAMBIA.” A manuscript-style Governor’s signature appears below the central text. The serial number 50/B 743439 appears twice — once in the upper left area and once along the lower right — printed in dark ink against the pale ground. Denomination numerals “K2” appear in the lower left corner in stylised form, echoed at the upper left. A crosshatch and zigzag border pattern frames the entire note on all four sides, incorporating small diamond motifs in green and pink tones that add further visual complexity to the perimeter.
The reverse presents a predominantly olive-green and yellow-ochre colour scheme, with the same decorative zigzag and geometric border continuing around all edges, consistent with the standardised design series. The central composition features a large engraved scene in which a standing adult figure — a teacher or educator — leans over a seated child who is writing in an open book, both figures rendered with expressive intaglio line engraving that conveys a sense of focused learning. Behind these figures, a low-rise modern building is depicted with columned frontage and clean architectural lines, likely representing a school or civic structure, set against a background with a large tree to the right rendered in fine detail. The “BANK OF ZAMBIA” title appears at the top of the reverse in the same bold serif typeface as the front, and the denomination “TWO KWACHA” is printed in prominent capital letters along the lower portion of the note. The denomination numeral “K2” appears in styled form in both the lower left and upper left corners of the reverse. A small printer’s imprint is visible in fine text along the bottom edge, referencing the security printer responsible for production. The paper shows a light, even texture throughout, with the overall engraving quality indicative of the high-specification security printing associated with this Bank of Zambia series.
