50 Kwacha Zambian Kwacha (Issued 1986-1988)
Zambia’s national confidence and post-independence ambition are stamped firmly into the design of this 50 Kwacha banknote, issued during the single-party era under President Kenneth Kaunda’s leadership. The imagery chosen for this note — from its proud national bird to the sculptural monument celebrating liberation — speaks directly to Zambia’s identity as a young sovereign state forging its own economic and cultural path. Issued during a period of significant economic pressure in Zambia, when the kwacha was subject to devaluation and monetary reform, these notes represent a defining chapter in the country’s financial history. The 1986–1988 series carries the visual language of a nation determined to assert its identity through its currency.
On the front, the dominant feature to the right of centre is a portrait of Kenneth Kaunda, the founding President of Zambia, rendered in fine intaglio engraving with strong tonal depth. Kaunda is depicted smiling warmly, shown from the shoulders upward, wearing what appears to be a traditional patterned garment visible at the lower edge of the portrait. To the left of centre, a majestic African Fish Eagle — Zambia’s national bird — is depicted perched and facing left, engraved with considerable detail in its wing and breast feathers, rendered predominantly in dark tones against the lighter background. The central text reads “I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND” in small capitals, with the denomination “FIFTY KWACHA” displayed prominently in large serif lettering, followed by “FOR THE BANK OF ZAMBIA” beneath. The issuing authority “BANK OF ZAMBIA” is printed in bold capital lettering across the top of the note, flanked on each side by the “50” denomination numeral. The Zambian coat of arms appears in the centre of the note, positioned between the eagle and the denomination text, engraved with fine detail showing the national shield and supporting figures. A Governor’s signature appears below the coat of arms. The serial number 37/F 064240 appears twice — once in the upper left area and once in the lower right — printed in dark ink. The overall colour palette of the front combines soft lilac and pink tones in the background with deeper purples and reds used for the geometric border patterns and diagonal chevron designs that frame the lower portion of the note. Guilloché rosette patterning is visible in the background behind the central text, providing a delicate security layer, and a geometric diagonal-stripe panel in deep red and purple runs along the lower section of the note’s face.
The reverse carries an imposing architectural composition dominated by a wide, modernist building rendered in deep red and crimson tones — this is the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, depicted in fine line engraving that captures its flat-roofed, rectilinear form and broad colonnaded façade. To the left of the building stands a tall sculptural monument: a male figure with arms raised and chains broken, a powerful emblem of liberation and independence that is closely associated with Zambia’s freedom from colonial rule. The sculpture is rendered in dark engraved lines, standing on a plinth, and commands considerable visual presence on the left-hand side of the note. The “BANK OF ZAMBIA” header appears across the top in the same bold lettering used on the front. The denomination “K50” appears in the upper left and upper right corners, and “FIFTY KWACHA” is printed in bold lettering across the lower central section of the reverse. The background colour of the reverse is a light violet and lilac, with geometric border patterns echoing those of the front face. The printer’s imprint “THOMAS DE LA RUE AND COMPANY LIMITED” is visible in small text along the lower edge of the note, confirming production by one of the world’s foremost security printing houses.
