500 Kwacha Zambian Kwacha (Issued 2003-2011)

Zambia’s currency underwent significant modernisation in the early 2000s as the Bank of Zambia sought to strengthen banknote security and refresh the visual identity of its circulating notes following years of economic instability and hyperinflationary pressure. The 500 Kwacha denomination, issued between 2003 and 2011 as part of the Bank of Zambia series running from 2002 to 2012, reflects this push toward contemporary banknote design while drawing on Zambia’s natural heritage and national symbolism. These notes were subsequently withdrawn from circulation following the redenomination of the Zambian Kwacha in 2013, when new notes replaced the old series at a ratio of one thousand to one. They remain a recognisable piece of Zambia’s recent monetary history.

On the front, the note is dominated by a large, finely engraved illustration of an African fish eagle perched on a branch, positioned to the right of centre. This bird — Zambia’s national symbol — is rendered in rich brown and ochre tones with considerable detail in its plumage, showing the distinctive white head and breast contrasting with darker wing feathers. The background behind the eagle features stylised tree forms and a pale green and yellow colour wash. To the upper left, the issuing authority is clearly printed in bold serif lettering: “BANK OF ZAMBIA”, with the denomination “K500” appearing in the upper left corner and again in the lower right. The central text reads “I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND” above the denomination in large capital letters: “FIVE HUNDRED KWACHA”, followed by “FOR THE BANK OF ZAMBIA”. A Governor’s signature appears beneath this text, printed in cursive script with the title “GOVERNOR” set below it in small capitals. The serial number “DA 03 2600486” appears twice — once vertically along the left edge and once horizontally in the lower centre — printed in dark ink against the pale background. To the lower left, an embossed circular seal features the “BOZ” monogram within a decorative border, accompanied by the text “ZAMBIA” and the year “2003”. The overall colour palette of the front is a combination of pale gold, green, and yellow, with a subtle guilloché pattern forming the background across the full width of the note. A vertical security strip is embedded within the paper and visible when held to the light.

The reverse of the note is printed in a warm brown and ochre colour scheme throughout, giving the design a unified, earthy tone. To the left, an engraved African elephant is depicted in profile, its form rendered with strong linework against a background of stylised water ripple patterns rendered in horizontal lines. To the right of the elephant, a central scene depicts a group of figures engaged in agricultural labour — several people are shown working in a field, with one figure raising a tool overhead in a posture of active work. The scene is detailed and engraved in a traditional intaglio style, conveying rural industry and community. The “BANK OF ZAMBIA” text appears across the top of the note in the same bold serif typeface used on the front, with “K500” printed in the upper left and upper right corners and again at the lower right. The words “FIVE HUNDRED KWACHA” are printed in the lower left corner in clear capital lettering. A faint diagonal watermark area and show-through elements from the front of the note are visible when the note is examined against light. The printer’s credit — Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited — is noted in small text along the right edge of the reverse.
