1,000 Taka (Issued 2020)

Bangladesh Bank, established in 1972 as the central monetary authority of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, is the sole institution responsible for issuing the nation’s currency, and the 1,000 Taka note stands as the highest denomination in everyday circulation. The note belongs to the modernised security series that Bangladesh Bank has maintained since 2011 and which remained current through 2020, reflecting sustained investment in anti-counterfeiting technology during a period of rapid economic growth. Printed in soft lavender and violet tones, the issue pairs a dignified national portrait with one of the country’s most recognisable modern landmarks, combining ceremonial authority with secure, contemporary design.

On the front, the note is dominated by an engraved portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father and first President of Bangladesh, positioned to the left of centre against a pale lavender ground. He is depicted wearing his characteristic dark-framed spectacles and a dark jacket, his composed, forward-facing expression rendered in fine intaglio line work that lends the portrait considerable depth. The issuing bank’s name appears in elegant Bengali script — বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক — across the upper portion, with the denomination stated in large Bengali characters reading এক হাজার টাকা, meaning one thousand Taka. The numerals “1000” appear at the upper left and lower right, and a reddish-brown serial number is printed twice on the face. A holographic security strip bearing a star motif is embedded vertically towards the right, exhibiting a metallic sheen, while the words “BANGLADESH BANK” run vertically in English along the left edge. Fine guilloche rosette patterns and geometric latticework fill the background in soft lavender, and a watermark window sits to the left of the portrait.

The reverse is printed predominantly in violet and purple and features a detailed architectural depiction of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the National Parliament House of Bangladesh, designed by the architect Louis Kahn and located in Dhaka. The building is rendered in considerable engraved detail, showing its monumental geometric facade, surrounding water features, and the distinctive triangular and circular cut-outs that characterise the structure, with a sweeping forecourt in the foreground. The caption জাতীয় সংসদ ভবন appears in Bengali beneath the illustration, with “BANGLADESH BANK” inscribed in bold English capitals across the top and “ONE THOUSAND TAKA” running vertically along the right-hand edge. The denomination “1000” is printed in large numerals at the lower right, and ornate guilloche borders incorporating foliate and geometric motifs frame the whole composition in deeper violet.
