500 Taka (Issued 2020)

The 500 Taka is one of the most widely handled high-value notes in Bangladesh, part of the modernised security series issued by Bangladesh Bank to protect the currency against counterfeiting while retaining the imagery that defines the nation’s money. Finished in cool mint and sage greens, the design balances a bold denomination layout with a finely engraved portrait and a rural scene that speaks to the country’s agricultural heart. The note remained current legal tender throughout 2020 and continues to circulate widely across Bangladesh.

On the front, the central portrait depicts Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father and first President of Bangladesh, shown with his distinctive thick-framed spectacles and a dark jacket. The intaglio engraving captures his features with fine detail, standing perceptibly raised to the touch. The issuing authority’s name appears in Bengali script across the top — বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক — alongside “BANGLADESH BANK” set vertically along the left border. The denomination is stated in large Bengali script reading পাঁচশত টাকা, “Five Hundred Taka”, with the numeral “500” in bold maroon at the upper left and lower right. A red serial number is printed twice, and a vertical security thread runs the full height of the note just left of centre. Intricate pale-green guilloche patterning fills the background, with a lighter watermark zone set to the left of the portrait.

The reverse presents a richly detailed scenic vignette rendered in dark olive and grey-green intaglio, depicting a calm Bangladeshi river with a sailing boat at its centre and a second vessel in the distance. To the left, figures work the land with oxen and a plough, while in the foreground a group of men and women gather near the riverbank carrying baskets and bundles, evoking a rural market scene. Trees and open fields extend into the background, lending the composition depth and tranquillity. “BANGLADESH BANK” is printed in clear serif lettering across the top, with “FIVE HUNDRED TAKA” set vertically to the right, the numeral “500” at the lower corners, and বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক beneath the central scene. A decorative border of repeated geometric motifs runs along the left edge.
