100 Taka (Issued 2011)

The 100 Taka is one of Bangladesh’s most familiar everyday notes, part of the modernised security series issued by Bangladesh Bank to bring the nation’s paper currency into line with international anti-counterfeiting standards. Its design is best known for the Star Mosque of old Dhaka on the reverse, a much-loved architectural landmark that gives the note its popular name. It remains current legal tender and continues to circulate widely throughout the country.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father and first President of Bangladesh, rendered in dark navy blue intaglio to the left of centre. His face is depicted with the characteristic thick-rimmed glasses and a Mujib coat, the collarless jacket closely associated with his public image. The background is washed in soft aquamarine and pale blue with subtle guilloche patterning. The issuing authority বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক (Bangladesh Bank) is printed prominently at the top centre, with the numeral “100” in rust-brown at the upper right and the denomination in large Bengali script একশত টাকা in the central field. A serial number is printed twice in dark ink, a vertical security thread runs through the right-central portion, and “BANGLADESH BANK” appears vertically in English along the left edge.

The reverse is dominated by a detailed architectural illustration of the Star Mosque, known in Bengali as তারা মসজিদ and labelled beneath the image. Located in Armanitola in old Dhaka, the mosque is shown in frontal elevation, its distinctive row of pointed arches spanning the prayer-hall facade, its ornamental domes decorated with star motifs, and a broad forecourt with a reflective pool in the foreground. The illustration is rendered in blue and indigo tones consistent with the note’s palette, with fine line engraving capturing the columns, archways and decorative dome surfaces. “BANGLADESH BANK” is printed in English across the upper portion, “ONE HUNDRED TAKA” runs vertically along the right edge, and the numeral “100” appears in bold at the lower right. A watermark of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait can be detected in the paper when held to light.
