10 Quetzales (Issued 2013)
The 10 Quetzales note is among Guatemala’s most commonly encountered denominations, representing the mature expression of the Banco de Guatemala’s modern printing programme in which traditional national iconography is combined with contemporary intaglio engraving and layered security. Its design draws on the country’s independence heritage and its extraordinary natural environment, and it remains current legal tender.
On the front, a formal portrait to the right of centre depicts General Miguel García Granados, the military leader and liberal statesman who became President of Guatemala following the Liberal Revolution of 1871. The portrait is rendered in fine intaglio, showing him in civilian dress with spectacles, his jacket and features defined by careful cross-hatching. The overall scheme is a warm rose-red and carmine, with the central numeral “10” in a bold transparent-tint style and the text “DIEZ QUETZALES” in serif capitals beneath. “BANCO DE GUATEMALA” with “GUATEMALA, CENTRO AMERICA” runs along the top border, a resplendent quetzal bird in green and red flies at the upper left above a small national flag, and a Mayan decorative motif adds historical depth. The serial number appears twice in dark red, with signature lines labelled “GERENTE GENERAL” and “PRESIDENTE” and a vertical security strip embedded in the paper.
The reverse presents a richly detailed historical scene depicting the signing of Guatemala’s Act of Independence in 1821, set within a legislative chamber. The composition shows seated and standing figures around a central table, with draped blue-and-white national flags and a gallery of observers above, painted in a warm palette of burgundy, rose and muted blue. A caption beneath identifies the signing of the Act of Independence. To the right, a vertical panel carries Mayan-inspired engravings and a repeated figure motif, “DIEZ QUETZALES” is printed along the lower margin, “BANCO DE GUATEMALA” runs across the top flanked by Mayan border elements, and the numeral “10” sits at the lower right.
